Failed Medical Termination

Hello
This is my first post, but I am a long time lurker and this board has helped me so much over the past weeks. A big thank you to you all.
I had a medical termination 4 weeks ago ( at 5 weeks). I felt assured of my decision although very upset that I had been so careless ( I took the pill , but for some reason I still became pregnant). The procedure itself went well; I bleed for 1 week, but had no extreme cramps & don't think I passed large clots. After a week I felt much better and tried to move on. However, fast forward to this week I have tested positive using a pregnancy test ( x 3 times!). I am distraught at the thought of being pregnant still. I have an appointment on fri to have a scan and to decide next steps. I have no other symptoms ( but am now imagining things I think). The one symptom that has remained is that I have sore breasts- I thought it might be a sign of my next period, but it seems not. I would really appreciate anyone else's experiences of possible failed medical abortions or retained tissue etc. I am so so scared. Thank you in advance.

You poor thing. You must be feeling desperate.

I was in a similar situation to you. I had a scan about a week after the termination (standard procedure here) where they found i had retained products. I desperately wanted to avoid surgery so they sent me away to see if it came away naturally. I had to return every week for a scan. After about three weeks they said i was at risk of infection so advised me to have the surgery. Tbh it wasn't half as bad as i was expecting and i wished i'd gone for that option right from the start. Once it was done i started feeling a lot better and was able to start moving on.

What is it that you're most worried about in terms of the surgery?

I'm so sorry you're in this position. Don't blame yourself; these things do happen Thanks

I am in the same position. I had a medical abortion almost 3 weeks ago. I was almost 8 weeks. The procedure was fine, I did pass a lot of clots and bleed heavily but it wasn't really painful. I took the test I was given on Monday and it was positive. I bled for over 2 weeks. I have got an appointment tomorrow for a scan. I'm terrified. I go on holiday on Sunday so If anything needs doing it will have to wait. I don't have any pregnancy symptoms which were very strong before the abortion.

How was your appointment today?

Hello
Sorry for the delay; I have had lots of issues with logging in. Shoe Thank you for your kind words. I went to the clinic yesterday and was petrified. I found the experience far more stressful the 2nd time round. I was scanned and to my relief wasn't pregnant but had a lot of retained tissue. I was offered more pills or the surgical option. I went for the surgery as the risk of infection with 2nd pills is high. I was very nervous, but it went well. I was sedated and can't remember anything about the procedure. Everyone was so so lovely. In the theatre room I felt very panicked as it looks ( unsurprisingly) like a theatre, but you are soon out at ease. The sedation feels very odd- you get a tingly sensation in the back of the throat and then you are out. I was given a painkiller thing up the bum ( can,t remember it happening either thank goodness) and was then sat outside with a hot pack. I felt the whole thing went well and felt no pain at all. If I had of still been pregnant I would of been allowed a GA and I think I would of been far more distressed. I wish you all the best with your appointment. I am forever in debt to the lovely people at Marie Stopes.

I'm pleased it's all over for you. Like you, I am no longer pregnant but have a small amount of retained tissue. I was given a half dose of the misoprostol tablets to take home with me to take. We are going on holiday tomorrow so I'm going to wait until we get home. Fingers crossed it works!
