20wk scan - potential problem with baby's feet

My friend had her 20wk scan today and (after 3 hours of giggling about to try and get the baby into a better position) she's been told to return next week for a meeting with a consultant. Apparently the scan didn't show up enough of the baby's feet. The person doing the scan said it wasn't club foot but she'd like the consultant to take another look. Any ideas what this could be about?

CLubfoot - also known as talipes - is probably the most 'common' foot problem seen at 20 weeks. Tell your friend that it is easily fixed, my DS is now 2 and we had news about his feet being deformed at our 20 week scan. We were devastated but got lots of help and advice from a charity called Steps and he has perfect feet now, in fact he runs faster than the rest of us.
I know how scary it is though, happy to give her more advice if it is talipes

Im not sure what other probs could be seen on the feet at 20 weeks other than club feet maybe have a look and the steps website?. If it is club feet easily treated I was born with it myself as was ds1 and waiting on a scan too check wether dc3 has it as well thankfully ds2 was ok.

Ds2 had positional talipes diagnosed at birth, i had to do some stretching exercises for a few weeks and its fine now. My cousin had a severe case and needed surgery as a toddler but is now a very athletic teenager with no problems. As mentioned above it is usually easily fixed. Hope its all ok on the next scan.

DD1 was born with her left foot folded back against her shin, "talipes" on her notes.

we had to massage the foot and stretch it out.

by the 6 week check they were happy, no treatment/physio needed. no sign of it now (age 6), or problem with feet/shoes. Forgot about it until other people have the same thing!

I had a club foot at birth, had surgery as an infant and have totally normal feet. All my joints are weak and crappy, but I certainly don't notice any different between my feet at all (don't even know which one it was!)

If the sonographer said "not club foot", maybe she meant mild or unusual talipes (club foot).

Maybe an extra toe or toes? Rare, but it happens (as can extra fingers), and I think it's of little/no consequence as far a health of the baby goes. Maybe unusually webbed toes, or 2 toes fused together?

The other thing is to try to reassure your friend that all could be fine when they get a proper look. Sometimes if they cant get a good angle on the scan things look like they shouldn't. Its horrible when you get suspected abnormalities on a late scan, there's nothing you can do but worry and sometimes it turns out there's nothing wrong after all.

It could simply be that she couldnt see enough of the feet due to the baby's position which meant it looked odd. I had to have a repeat scan as they couldn't see all of DS2s spine at once.

I was born with my feet folded back against my shins and apparently my parents were told to massage my feet daily...... I was a professional dancer for 12 years, so it obviously worked! Don't worry.

Hi everyone - thanks for your messages. Sadly my friend has had a meeting with a consultant who has said they think the baby has Edward's disease (hence deformed feet). She's awaiting for the results of an amnio for further confirmation.

Am sorry to hear that, is it just a problem with the foot they can see?

Its just a friend of mine had her baby about a year and half ago nothing was picked up on the scans but when he was born his hands and feet hadn't formed properly, he doesn't have edwards syndrome and is walking about just fine. Its just his hands and feet hadn't developed.

How sad echops am so sorry for your friend, I havent heard of this what does it mean?x

Apparently Chromosone 18 ring results in a wide variety of problems. It includes medium/severe problems with the heart, eyes, hearing, brain development.
