Had my dating scan - now worried - can anyone reassure me?

According to my dates, I am 11 weeks today, the dating scan has put me back to just over 10 weeks.
I've got myself in a complete tizz, worrying that my dates are right, but the baby isn't developing properly.
My rational side is telling me not to be daft.

I really wouldn't worry, I don't know a single person whose dating scan is accurate! Mine says I got PG two weeks before my LMP, work that one out!
Maybe your LO took a little longer to implant?

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2010 18:58

Well allowing for the fact that the scan can be out a few days either way and generally you don't know exactly when you ovulated to the day, I wouldn't worry.

It's really nothing to worry about.

Fabster · 09/07/2010 19:00

Try not to worry. I was not happy when I was dated as 8 weeks and 2 days when I knew I was 8 weeks and 3 days because I knew when I had conceived. I realise now it isn't a big deal but can totally understand your worries.

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2010 19:00

Ahickey, I presume your lmp wasn't a real period at all. That you were already pregnant. Conception 2 weeks before lmp would imply you got pg a cycle earlier than you assumed.

My dating scan was spot on to the day. I am the only person I know for whom this is true.

DuelingFanjo · 09/07/2010 19:04

don't worry - my scans have put me a week ahead which is absolutely impossible as I had IVF and know exactly when I conceived.

They told me that scans can be 5 days wrong.

Thankyou

This is number 4 baby, I really should be more laid back about it all by now!

Showofhands - it was a real LMP, I promise! I make very big babies, which is why LO is measuring ahead, I pressume.

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2010 19:09

I had what looked like a real lmp with both of my pregnancies. It is quite common. The poster ladyintheradiator for example found out she was pg and a month ahead of where she thought she was. Her 'period' wasn't a period at all.

All babies develop at a very similar rate in the first weeks, that's why the dating scan is done then. It is only after this that genetics and other factors come into play. Early development is fairly uniform.

AhickeyfromKenickie · 09/07/2010 19:18

I was due on 25th Jan, tested that day, got a BFN. My period came 26th Jan. We had sex 6/7th Feb. I was expecting a period on 22nd Feb, tested 23rd Feb, BFN. I didn't get a BFP until Feb 28th. We were TTC, and I kept a very detailed diary!

AhickeyfromKenickie · 09/07/2010 19:19

Sorry for the hijack Paulo!

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2010 19:26

Ahickey, you're probably just weird.

Just pointing out that the margin for error with a dating scan is only a few days either way. A whole month out as in your case is just not explicable by scan limitations or genetics. A rogue non-medical person masquerading as a sonographer perhaps.

AhickeyfromKenickie · 09/07/2010 19:32

Lol, yes that's the only explanation!
They've dated me two weeks out, not a month, which is what they did with DS. When he arrived at 10lbs 8lb, MW was still trying to convince me he was two weeks early .

lilmamma · 10/07/2010 21:42

my daughter knew the exact date of her last period,as she came on her period on the night of her partners big birthday party.typical...anyway when she went for her dating scan, they put her back 2 weeks, and said she could have got caught two weeks after her period,so why the count the first day you come on,i dont know..

it was so annoying to think you are so many weeks, only to have to go back 2 weeks, and as she was so sick for the first 16 weeks,it felt so unfair..

good new that finally at 16 weeks and 2 days the sickness has gone, thank goodness..

addie81 · 10/07/2010 21:55

I know exactly which day I ovulated on because we were charting with "taking charge of your fertility", and the scan date is at least three days off when I actually conceived. I think that since you are talking about a difference of less than a week, it is very unlikely to be anything to worry about.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 10/07/2010 23:02

ShowofHands - my EDD with DS was bang on for my cycle dates (but I was charting my cycles, taking temps and so on, and had a pretyt good idea of when I ovulated to about 24 hrs) and according to my dating scan this time round, I'm bang on for my cycle dates again! I don't know anyone in my circle of friends to whom this has happened either.

giagindi · 12/07/2010 04:54

Less than 5% of babies actually come on their due dates anyway - there's a reason they're called estimated due dates! If you're only out by a few days there's nothing to worry about. One of my friends had her EDD pushed back by 10 days when she was 34 weeks pregnant - that was a bit of a nightmare for her as it was her second and she really didn't want to have to wait another 10 days before being induced if that was necessary!

My scans have consistently shown an EDD of 9 August since my first dating scan at 6+4 which I thought was 7+2 going by my LMP - remember that even knowing when you ovulated, it can still be a day or so before fertilisation takes place, which can account for dates being slightly out.

Emster30 · 12/07/2010 08:54

This happened to me - I was put back a week when I went for a scan at what I thought was 11+3, so I was actually only 10+3. However then when I went back for the nuchal scan at 13+6 the foetus was already quite a bit too big for it, and it was measuring about a week ahead at the 20-week scan too.

So now I am 38+1 and secretly hoping it's actually really 39+1...
