Scan at 7 weeks - help!

Hi all

I just had a scan - I think I am around 7 weeks pregnant, but the scan showed sac and fetal pole of around 5/6 weeks. No HB.

Anyone got any experience of this? Did it turn out ok? Or am I definitely going to miscarry (this is what the midwife made it sound like)

thank you

Are your dates based on your LMP only? Do you know when you ovulated? Are your cycles short and regular or long and/or erratic.

If it's possible that you could actually be only 5/6 weeks gone then there's hope as you don't always see a hb at that stage anyway.

Yes dates are based on LMP. Cycles are pretty regular 28/9 days

I'm afraid it doesn't sound great then, although there's always hope at this stage. But for you to be only 5/6 weeks pregnant now would've meant that if you hadn't got pregnant, this cycle would've been 35+ days (assuming a typical luteal phase of around 14 days).

I had scan when I thought I was 6+3 (have very regular cycles of 27-28 days) - saw sac and yolk but no HB (with DS had a huge HB at 6+2). Sonographer asked if I had long cycle, and I said no, cycle never more than 28 days, so was worried that I was having another MC. Went back 10 days later for a rescan when I would have been 8 weeks based on LMP and saw a HB - sonographer dated me at 7+3, so would have been just under 6 weeks at first scan. So there is no way you can know without going for a rescan, and there is a very good chance that everything is fine and your dates are off. Good luck and hope everything turns out ok.

After some bleeding, I had a scan at 6 weeks and no hb was seen. I thought i was miscarring but I went back at 7 weeks and the hb was there.

thank you for sharing your experiences - I guess I do just have to wait for the next scan.

I don't agree with the poster who said rather authoratively that 'I'm afraid it doesn't sound great then' - unless she's a doctor, and a doctor who's seen you, in which case I apologise - I don't think anyone can tell you until you have another scan. I know two women who didn't have a hb at 6 weeks but did at 7. It's hard to wait it out, I know. I wish you all the luck.

summerfruits I appreciate that - I guess that Japhrimel was probably trying to not give false hope, but it did freak me out a little!

We just need to be careful about how we voice our opinions on these websites. We're not experts in anyone else's situations - and not even our own - and sometimes I think that's forgotten. And it does freak people out, and that's not helpful.

I had a friend who also had the same situation as you - her daughter just turned one...have hope

zerominuszero · 10/07/2010 07:11

I was under the impression that it was very rare to get a heartbeat on any scan under about 14 weeks...no...?

BaggedandTagged · 10/07/2010 07:21

Zero- no, it would be quite usual to pick up a heartbeat at 7 weeks but if they don't it doesn't necessarily mean there is no hope.

As others have suggested, dates could be out.

Honeybee79 · 10/07/2010 09:14

I had a scan at about 5/6 weeks and they saw the same - a little sac but no heartbeat. It was basically just too early for them to see more. A week later I went back and there was a heartbeat but they said even then they wouldn't have been that surprised if they hadn't managed to see a heartbeat yet. From what you have said, it sounds pretty normal. Good luck!

miamix · 10/07/2010 18:56

I had a scan at what I thought was 6+2 and just the sac was seen, I was told to come back in another week at what I thought was 7+2 and there was a heartbeat but they dated me at 5+5. To be fair I fell on the pill so had (and still have) no clue about my cycle but after the first scan I immediately leapt on here and other sites and read a lot about other women going through the same thing and them being not as far on as they thought. At that stage just a day can make all the difference to what is seen.

Good luck, anyway, hope all turns out well x

Thank you all for your responses - I'm feeling slightly less desperate now!
