Strange question, but i am 13 weeks pregnant with my second baby, and am craving all things raw.... sushi, rare beef, parma ham etc etc... i have decided that i really should give up those things but i really don't seem to be able to kick the marinated anchovy habit!!! Does anyone know if i can eat them?

yes, there's no advice about not eating them, I'm sure. I love anchovies, big fat marinated ones.

jonquil · 17/08/2005 19:54

No, it's the sainsbury's ones .. but thought because they were raw (but marinated in oil and -vinegar) they would be a no-no. But glad to hear you ate loads of them and had no ill-effects. Hooray!

yes go ahead the way anchovies are made they are heavily salted and matured over time and this kills off any nasties

If I weren't vegetarian I would eat the parma ham but not the beef or sushi again parma ham is heavily salted and matured over time to kill off anything nasty (rare beef and sushi are not).

I'm a microbiologist specialising in food safety (or at least I used to be pre nappy days)!

Well that's it then (she said tucking into a bucket of anchovies!) ... the all clear from a microbiologist! Thank you sweetkitty!

no, haven't tried the delia thingy but sounds like you have to cook them and that would ruin all the fun for me!

It seems awful to add a note of doom but it's so weird this topic has come up I can't resist. when pregnant with dd2 I ate a dodgy anchovy, got terrible food poisoning and went into premature labour! BUT it was on a not very nice takeaway pizza so had probably been out of its tin way too long. I'm sure eating them fresh out of the tin is fine for the reasons everyone's said

The food standards agency says that sushi / sashimi is ok, as long as the restaurant has chilled it to a certain temperature beforehand, to kill off certain parasites (I think). Apparently all sushi restaurants are supposed to do this. Question is whether you think your local sushi restaurant falls into this category - or whether you want to potentially offend by enquiring...
