lying on left vs right

I've read, and been told that lying on the left is better for baby than lying on the right...

Why?!

Also, I have a gammy hip on the right, and I hate to say I usually end up on my right as it's more comfortable - will this cause any problems?!

I start off with good intentions, but my hearing is slightly off in my left ear and DH breaths heave, so I do tend to lie on my right after a while to drown out his nasal noise.

As for why I am not 100% sure, I think I know but as I am not certain I will wait for someone in the know to answer that.

I have to sleep on the right ( my only working ear) so it is nice and quiet. I have 2 very healthy DD, and didn't have problems in my pregnancies. I think if you lie on your left the blood supply is supposed to be better to the womb. it is better to sleep though than not to. you can't either really control what you are doing while sleeping

Prosecco · 05/07/2010 10:56

It's something to do withn blood supply to your organs (kidneys?).

I remember my SIL who was pregnant at the same time as me telling me that, and ever so virtuously managing to do it.

I, on the other hand, seemed to only be able to get comforable on the right.

Figures

I think it's to do with the inferior veinwhich is in the right side of your body.

ZippyPippy · 05/07/2010 15:43

and I've heard you can't lie on your back either and I guess your front is out too? Doesn't leave many options does it!! Agree with mamaloco, surely it is better to sleep somehow.

parkj83 · 05/07/2010 15:59

lol I start the night off snuggled up on my left, but by the morning I'm sprawling half between my belly and RHS. It's funny cos I flop from one side to another, and DH gets a bit worried about Fidget, but s/he's still pummelling me mercilessly, so I'm not too worried.

I knew about the whole back thing, and that's out for me as that makes my hip worse anyway

I'm a right hand (and belly!) sleeper too - have tried to sleep on left but just not comfy and agree with the comments that surely its better to get some sleep (Esp as I'm only averaging 5-6 hours anyway!)

PickleSarnie · 05/07/2010 18:06

I was told today to sleep on my left side to try and get mini-me facing the right direction. Not sure why sleeping on left will make it realise they should be facing the wrong direction though. Fairly sure rational thought is beyond the realms of an unborn child?

parkj83 · 05/07/2010 18:29

lol, I'd have to agree with you on that one Pickle!

After always sleeping on my back before getting pregnant I started having to sleep on my left because being on my back made my (morning) sickness worse and I have a dodgy right hip too (thankfully getting it sorted by osteopath finally). To be honest I don't find it that comfortable sleeping on my left and often wake up on my back. I think if you are able to sleep in a certain position then go with it- like ginger2000 I am struggling to sleep anyway so any shut-eye is precious!

horseymum · 05/07/2010 19:54

it is to do with optimal foetal positioning and encouraging baby to lie with its back to your front, instead of back to back with you, for a better labour, as are other things like not slouching back into settee and going on all fours. the vein thing is why you're not meant to lie on your back but to be honest, if you are cutting off blood supply you would no doubt wake up or at least stir enough to move. i have had to keep at it this time tostay on left side as baby not in a great position and want to give it every chance to turn, although tempting to just go on the right. having a pillow to support bump and knees helps as does being tilted quite far forward, almost like recovery position.

All this chat about it yesterday must have sunk in on some deep and meaningful level

I woke up this morning on my left! But I also know I woke up loads in the night, but again, more often on the left than usual!

There's hope for me yet...!
