How many blankets?

I have just seen that John Lewis is selling off Lemon cellular blankets in its clearance. We don't have any blankets for our baby yet. I think we will need some, but then move on to grobags. The baby will have a cot, a pram and a moses basket.

How many cot blankets and moses basket blankets will we need?

I seem to remember that lots of people don't like cellular blankets, why?

Are blankets typical gifts such that we shouldn't really get many?

Yes, we were given loads of blankets, far more than we ever used. However most of them didn't seem to be very practical - either itchy wool ones or overly thick fleecy ones.

Babies' tiny fingers can get stuck in the holes in cellular which might be why some people don't like them? Not particularly dangerous AFAIK but can disturb baby. On the other hand the holes = less danger of overheating/suffocation etc I should imagine, which must outweigh the finger thing?!

Bear in mind grobags can't be used if baby is under 7lb I think, so you might not be able to use them for a while depending on your baby's size at birth.

I would say it's worth buying a few moses basket sized cellular blankets and one or two cot ones (in really cold weather you might want to use them over the top of a grobag).

I had 2 cot blankets and 2 moses basket blankets. (all cellular)

I actually used the moses basket ones more as they were a nice size for covering baby in the car seat or pram.

The cot ones I used in the end for DCs to sleep on, while in the grow bag so I wasnt washing sheets all the time LOL DD1 especially was a sicky baby, so would lie her on the blanket, when sicky, take blanket off and put her on the sheet - no changing sheets in the middle of the night!

I thought cellular blankets were recommended as being the safest because they're so breatheable! I've never heard of people not liking them.

My sister in law didn't like cellular blankets (and also refused the lace shawl I'd knitted for the baby) because she firmly believed that the baby's fingers would break (possibly right off...) if it caught one in the holes... :rolleyes:

I like the cotton ones for summer, and used the woolen ones from when I was a baby for dd. I only had one cotton one and two wool ones and three altogether was about right - gave me enough options and was enough to have one or two in the wash.
