Anyone else measuring small?

I'm 29 weeks and measuring small the last two MW checks. Only a couple of cm though, and I think they are a week out on my dates anyway (putting me ahead of what I believe I am) but I'd still prefer not to be sent for a growth scan which is what will happen in two weeks if i'm still not on the 'scale'

BTW I'm very tall, it is my first and I'm having a girl. Also I never put weight on around my belly (legs instead!)if that makes a difference

Yes yes yes - this is one of those things you wish you'd been told up front!

I was referred to the Midwife Led Unit by a GP because I was small for dates. I was v upset by the way it was handled.

While I was labouring I was under the care of a very experienced and fabulous midwife.

She was looking through my notes when I'd first arrived and said, "You had some contact with a GP and were referred to the MLU?"

I said "Yes, I was coming up small for dates"

She said "Well, of course you were small for dates. Look at how tall you are! I bet that got you worried for no good reason"

legallyblond - see my post above as well. I think I was 4cm out as well and I'm the same height as you. I'm sure you'll be fine - try not to worry

Thanks for all the "good lucks" for this morning.

Saw the lovely, lovely consultant. He was v reassuring and when he measured (he explained that measuring with the tape measure is v crude), I was only 3cms/3 weeks too small... he also scanned me (just in his room with the small ultrasound) and all seemed fine. Baby was squirming around and there seemed to be enough fluid (a pocket of 5.6cms, which is apparently good - any pockets over 2cms are good, he told me).

I have to go back and see him again in one week, and, the same day, I will also have a full, detailed growth scan.

He thinks its probably a combination of the baby's position - not transverse after all (or not today, at any rate), but head quite far down into my pelvis, and the fact the baby might be quite a littl'un.

I just have to keep on montitoring movements for now. And apparently eat more! He stressed that I must have 3 good meals and 3 snacks of at least 250cals everyday! Mmmm, cake!

Phew!

Thanks again everyone.

Let me know how you get on Sedgiebaby

Hi Legallblond, glad you were reassured today. Enjoy your cake

sedgiebaby · 08/07/2010 15:46

legallyblond this is great news, I'm now hoping for a 'cake prescription' also, In fact I think I'll get a head start now!!

Also, I've taken to online tutorials and measuring my own bump I think I'm doing it right and I really do feel sure that my belly is bigger than my last mw measurement and possibly on the scale (I'll be doing my own operations next lol!), I'll see her tues and find out if I'm to have a growth scan also.

My worries are around not enough amniotic fluid so it is good that your dr checked this. Interestingly my baby has been head down basically resting well in the pelvic area and practically head just above my pubic bone (there is no doubt about this I practically tuck her head into my pants, and she will not tolerate having trousers done up there is a lot of protestation if I have anything low rise and tight) so I wonder if similar to you there too.

I'll post what happens next wk.

Sedgie, an update on me. Been to my mw appointment (37w tomorrow) and she measured me as 31cm so no growth in past 2 weeks apparently. Being sent for a doppler/growth scan next Wednesday but have decided to get a private one done at 6pm today anyway, don't want it hanging over me at weekend. Will let u no what is said, may be interesting to have an idea about bump size/scanned size relation...

legallyblond · 08/07/2010 17:10

Duejuly - good luck for tonight. Let us know, ok?

duejuly2010 · 08/07/2010 19:30

Hi, just got back. K I measured 31cm fundal height by midwife (and me when I got home).

At scan just now he comes up at 6lb 7oz which is bang on target. The sonographer measured the 4 quarters (whatever that means) for amniotic fluid and found a total of 15cl, one pool was 5cm which is apparently excellent. She also did the doppler (stuff going in and out of cord)...all fine.

She basically said that as the head has begun to engage the fundal height has stayed the same over the last two weeks because that's what happens as the baby drops. The midwife has to be cautious as it's her job.

Obviously this will not be the case for everyone but I measured 31cm at 37 weeks and all is absolutely fine so try not to worry too much peeps .

Yay duejuly, gald all is fine. Its so reassuring, isn't!

Update on me, just had my 31 wk m/w appointment and was measured, had one mega growth spurt of 3.5 cm in 2 wks (nearly twice as fast as expected based on 1 cm per wk) which has put me well within the scale for the first time. Now watch me worry I'll have a whopper of a baby lol!

For anyone else reading who may worry about measuring small please read on... my m/w said that my (customised growth) chart was showing an estimated baby size at 40 wks of 7lb 11oz to 10lb 11oz, which is very generous (I was only 6lb 4oz btw). In her view this 'scale' of expected growth was not ideal to be plotting against, and being below the bottom line albeit growing weekly should not cause angst and is perhaps even more agreable, although it would normally be a trigger for a growth scan.

That's great news sedgie . Glad you've been reassured. 1 week and 2 days to go until my section so will let you know how big baby actually is . Dragging like mad now tho...

Dylanpsmummy · 14/07/2010 08:35

I measured small with my first baby but when he was born he weighed 7lb 10 don't worry about it.
