Weight Gain and Diet in Pregnancy

Hello ladies,

did a dreaded weigh in thismorning on my Wii fit board and wasnt too happy with what it told me!

Have many of you changed your diet much since being pregnant? - do you generally eat more and not worry about it?

Im not necessarily worrying as i put on over 3 stone with my first and went straight back down to pre pregnancy size 10 within a few weeks but im just wondering if the whole 2stone guideline is right or if you guys have fluctuated much around this mark?

Hi YummyMummy1208 I was a size 10 pre-preg around 129 pounds-ish and have always watched what I ate/ exercised well. I'm now getting on for 19weeks pregnant and last scale check had put on 9 pounds. I keep worrying that this is too much/ I look fat etc. but my DP keeps telling me to stop being silly as I'm pregnant and of course I'm going to put on weight!

The thing is I have eaten more since being pregnant and though I haven't pigged out on rubbish food, have probably allowed myself more 'treat's. I have been healthy though (just eating more of it as been hungry and tend to feel dizzy when go without eating for a couple of hours or more) and swimming 3/4 times a week.

So...I figure I'm giving up the scales! There's nothing I can do about it and as long as my staple diet is not Krispy Kremes and Cadburys then I'm ok!

I'm hoping for the few weeks ping back into shape as you but am not sure !

YummyMummy1208 · 30/06/2010 15:44

i know what u mean, this time round i started at about 122lb and im now 140lb! im 24 weeks nearly and thinking iv got another 16 to go which r the most weight gaining weeks so am going to end up piling on 3 stone again like last time.

I just cant stop thinking about food, at work im clock watching all day until lunch time, i never really ate lunch at work would just snack and i never ate breakfast, now im having 3 meals a day with snacks inbetween so eating more on the normal scale but more than what my body was used to.

i really shouldnt spend so much time worrying but second time round is making me worry that i wont be able to ping back so easily! Cant wait until baby is here so i can get back to normal and start the gym again!

9lbs is nothing! i would be pleased if thats all i had put on, kinda made my 18lb weight gain sound quite big now!
but maybe we are all different, and as long as i get back to normal thats all that matters i suppose.

wen is ur due date? do u know what ur having?

I am snacking A LOT too (in fact snacking as I type!). I think if you managed to snap back last time you'll be fine - and just think even if it takes a few months (or more!) you'll get there in the end and it will all be worth it!

Also, you were less than me to start so I'd say we were evens

We've been given two due dates (!) - 25th Nov and 29th Nov so I'm not sure which one to plump for! Got our scan a week tomorrow and going to find out - I can't wait!

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about the weight thing - it sounds selfish but I know it's hard because it goes against everything I've been doing for the past ten years! And it's weird to see your body change isn't it? (all my weight has gone to my bum it is HUGE!) If it makes you feel better my SIL put on 6 stone and had pretty much lost it 3 months later and she ate so bad whilst pregnant, no exercise or anything and smoked. So I think we can count ourselves healthy!I also read that Kate Hudson put on over 4 stone (saw some pics too and she looks like she really did) - look at her now! I'd die for her figure!

What is your due date? x

lolabanola · 30/06/2010 16:25

Yes but Kate Hudson has a personal trainer, personal chef, someone to do her shopping for her and probably had a bit of surgery to help her look that good!

Sorry to butt in on your thread but was just wondering how easy it is to lose the weight after the birth? Did you all have to go on strict diets? I'm 27 weeks and have so far gone from 125lb - 140lb, I feel like an elephant and am so worried that I will never lose the excess weight!

planner26 · 30/06/2010 17:02

Ha ha yes very true!

This only DC1 so I have no idea! Sounds like YummyMummy did it quickly though! I don't think that 15 pounds weight gain at 27w is bad at all (in fact if I'm only at that when I get to that point I'll be well chuffed!).

lolabanola · 30/06/2010 17:18

Come on yummy, tell us how to lose the weight after the birth!

YummyMummy1208 · 30/06/2010 19:25

lol. well for the first week or so it just naturally comes off u - i had a lot of water retention etc and that all disappears...such a good feeling jumping on the scales each day to be a few pounds lighter when u havnt done any work!
after it all stopped droppping off naturally i had about an extra 7 to 9lbs to loose but fitted back into my pre prenancy clothes again.
I never went on a diet, just joined our local gym and did my workout DVD at home but to be honest i wouldnt say that had a huge effect on the weight loss. I think as long as u dont put on too much weight, depending on ur metabolism before hand - mines qute fast, it just tends to drop off slowly on its own. i lost the last half a stone wen i joined the gym 5 months after he was born and i was going like 4 times a week (i am so proud i managed to do that cos its so unlike me!)
ull all be fine, its only cos its second time round im scared im gonna finally lose it and turn into a big frump with a wobbly belly afterwards! lol.
Did ur bellys go back to normal after having a baby (if ur on a second pregnancy?) or did u get it flat but with wobbly skin? - and stretchmarks, how hav u all coped with them or did u escape them??

i read Denise van outen is paying about 30 odd quid a day for specially prepared meals to be delivered to her house each morning. who has that kind of money to waste on food? when u can get it bak so easily by just watching what u eat and doing a few pump it up workouts??

I'm on my first yummy, I just hope to god that I don't get a wobbly stomach and stretch marks! I'm slapping that cream on morning, noon and night!!

Never been one for the gym so I just hope for a miracle and that all my excess flab falls off after the birth!!

Rockerbaby · 01/07/2010 07:44

It's my first and I've been totally stressing out about the whole weight thing (major detail here wp.me/pXKsd-u). I was a very trim size 10 before falling pregnant and ate a very strict diet. Since finding out though, I've totally relaxed and although, I'm not eating total crap I do enjoy the odd slice of birthday cake at work (yes we do work in a large office) and a few sweets now and again. And too my horror, after four weeks I found out that I had put the recommended amount of weight on for the whole of the first trimester! 5 pounds. Which meant that I've been totally obsessive about weighing myself every day, until I had a total melt down at the weekend. On Monday, I decided to move the scales into the spare room and I tell you it's done me the world of good. I've vowed to only weigh myself once a week from now on if I have to at all and as I know I'm not going totally mad on the junk food, I'm going to really try not to feel bad about the weight gain. But it's very weird for me, I always thought I'd just have a tiny bump and gentle squeeze and it'd pop out. Something tells me it's going to be nothing like I thought! xx

Rockerbaby · 01/07/2010 07:46

...Easier link soz! wp.me/pXKsd-u

planner26 · 01/07/2010 09:55

I too am slapping on the cream/oil/whatever I can get my hands on that might work! Rockerbaby - was probs not quite as strict as you before but had very similar weight gain earlier on and eating habits similar now.

I figure I'm going to enjoy not being quite as strict whilst I can. When I look back pre-preggo I couldn't last all day on what I ate then now, not that I starved myself or anything but I was a bit lapse sometimes.

Scales have GONE - well....they're still there but I'm staying away from them as much as I can and feel better already. Wish I was one of those women who never weight myself anyway and are naturally slim! I used to have to weight myself to keep in check!

Oh, also I packed away all my lovely slim clothes last night and now have a (much smaller) wardrobe of clothes that aren't going to make me feel bad!

WhatWillSantaBring · 01/07/2010 10:26

Hey Rocker - I shouldn't worry. I put on 8lbs in the first 8 weeks (yikes) but then it stabled off for the next four weeks. Sadly though I was about 10lbs over my "fighting" weight when I got pg, after living with a boy for the first time in my life (doing the classic of eating exactly the same as him and drinking mid week, which I never used to do).

Still, I figure its all going to be OK and if you can't relax about your weight during pg, when can you! I'm sooooo hungry all the time though - my tummy was just rumbling as I flicked on the net, and I had more than my usual pre-pg breakie this morning. Still an hour and half till lunch though!

I'm encouraged by the woman on MN (on the fabulous Pregnancy and birth funny stories thread) who lost 3 stone in the first week after birth because it was all retained water and a giant placenta. I live in hope that's what I've got! Mind you, the increase in size of my boobs alone must account for 5 lbs - each - they've gone up from a D to GG cup. True story!.

Having said all of the above, I still just look and feel fat rather than pregnant.

YummyMummy1208 · 01/07/2010 13:10

about the stretchmark thing, i think it totally depends on ur skin type - if u got stretchmarks during ur teenage years like at the tops of ur legs for example then u will get them in pregnancy. if u have no stretchmarks what so ever wen u got pregnant i would be pretty confident u wudnt get them during pregnancy.
they arent all that bad, i cried when i first found mine- they are the nice slivery ones thankfully, i felt so crap and depressed that my boyfriend would now suddenly think i was horrid and gross but then u can hardly even notice them. now i think as long as i get a flat belly bak men dont even notice much other than shape! and confidence is much more important than the shape of ur body so i live in hope!
cant wait to start getting fit after baby arrives already! feel so lazy not working out - ever - the last 4 months.
