Pregnancy cravings - odd

I'm 32 weeks with DC2 and I'm having the strangest cravings. I'm addicted to eating cloves - yes the little stud like spice that you stick in hams and curries. I can't help but eat a few every day. When I mentioned this to my mum, she said that both she and my grandma had the same cravings! I've tried googling the danger of this craving but can't see anything alarming - anyone know if this spice is dangerous to eat raw?

I'm also craving diesel (the smell and taste - i don't even know what it tastes like!) but obviously I'm not going to indulge that particular craving. I can't even explain why I'm craving it, I just am.

I keep buying fennel (the fresh version) and celery as these satisfy my desire for something astringent. I just don't get why I'm craving them.

This is a fairly boring thread I know, but just wondered if anyone else had similar cravings or something as bizarre as mine to make me feel better!

I almost wish I did have some interesting cravings but there's been nothing all that startling in either pregnancy. I was really into curries for the first few months, this time around, but now I'm mainly all about the cake.

My last pregnancy, it was Macdonald's sausage and egg mcmuffins every morning, much to the disgust of my co-workers.

The cloves thing is interesting - especially the genetic factor! I wonder what that's all about? I shouldn't think they're dangerous though.

Mine is mainly milk! My husband keeps telling me I must be deficient in Calcium but I'm not sure how you'd explain yours! Had craving for cough candy in the first trimester too.

I love hearing peoples cravings

My mother went mad for creosote and tar when pregnant with me. Said she used to roam the streets looking for a fence or a road that would satisfy her cravings (to sniff, not to eat ).
I've been very boring so far (27 weeks now) - no cravings for anything.

With my DD1 I IAD to eatanchovies, pineapple adn tinned peas (only from Spar) Not so bad you say until it is all mixed up in a big bowl with a spoon of red onion marmalade stirred in. I hate 3/4 bowls of it a day.

With DD2 it wasn't that strange just cheap supernoodles from Lidl - 6-8 packets a day

And if any of these things were unavailable when I wanted them I would sit and sob.

I like eating sand I lick my fingertips and dip it in DD's sandpit It's the crunchiness! I know I could eat an apple or some celery but I want sand! I can't believe I just confessed that. When I was having DD I used to stand in front of the open freezer with a dessert spoon and scoop out the ice, I wanted wet and crunchy. Ewwww, sets my teeth on edge!

It's called pica. See here

PlasticCenturion · 28/06/2010 17:42

The sand one is often associated with iron deficiency.

In the beginning (first 3 months) I ate lemons, the same way you would eat an orange, sometimes 5 or 6 at a time. Now I love cherry tomatoes... I especially enjoy the plum ones as you can bite off the bottom and then suck out the middle!! I have polished off two punnets of those today alone. I have also had the milk one cinnamongreyhound, and for about 3 weeks I only wanted Creme Caramels, pregnancy is weird. Must say I am not minding the tomato cravings as they are quite healthy, also lovelymama my mother had a craving for tomatoes when she was pregnant with me so maybe there is something passed on???

PaulineCampbellJones · 28/06/2010 18:27

I had pica where I wanted to lick the sandpaper strip on the side of matchboxes. Very hard these days to get as they are not made of sandpaper anymore so had to search shops for them!
Also had the same cravings as my mam, tomatoes, tomato juice and anything citrus.

AhickeyfromKenickie · 28/06/2010 19:14

Plastic - spot on, I'm anemic. How weird?!?

vmcd28 · 29/06/2010 07:10

I dont have anything too weird, but I am almost 19 weeks and still have one or two glasses or fresh orange each day, but I also MUST eat at least a couple of tomatoes. Preferably with wholegrain mustard.
