Retroverted Uterus and Amnio

Hi all

After receiving my results from combined screening (1:50) we decided to go ahead with an amnio.

We went to the FMM last friday when I was 15+4 (after psyching myself up) to have the amnio only to find my uterus is 'still' retroverted and my bowel is directly in front of it. My consultant re-scheduled the amnio in 2 weeks time (next friday).

I know this is a long shot, but does anyone else have any experience of this? Would my uterus grow enough in the two weeks to be sufficient enough to push my bowel out of the way?

I'm feeling good (I just have this feeling that everything is going to be ok no matter what) but my dh has not taken it all that well and don't know how he'll cope if we have to have it pushed back again.

janski31 - try not to read too much into the midwives tone of voice or the way they phrase things. At my amnio the midwife was very cagey about giving us any positive titbits to be going on with and I imagine that's because they can't be giving false hope out to people.
I don't think that's because they know anything particular about you but more because they see all outcomes which started with all circumstances/ sets of results.

janski31 · 08/07/2010 09:34

Hello EMS23

I know your right just probably me being paranoid!

How many weeks are you noe EMS23?

How did they start off by saying you was high risk?x

EMS23 · 08/07/2010 11:19

I'm 20 weeks today and I had a triple blood test at 16 weeks which resulted in my 1:21 result. For my age it should be 1:820 - I'm 31 yrs old.
They don't offer Nuchal fold scanning where I live so we opted for the blood test, expecting nothing to come of it.
They called 4 days after the bloods were taken and told me they needed me to come to the hospital as soon as possible to discuss the results. I asked what they were and she said "1:21 but any further discussion will need to be here, in person" so I left work and was there an hour later.
To say it came as a shock would be a massive understatement!
Have you decided not to have an amnio then?

janski31 · 08/07/2010 11:35

Yeh only cos Ihad a mmc in jan and am scared of it happening again.

Am so glad your amino has come back clear. App in my bloods it was my ihibin a that was high which is a sign of downs but have also read it can be when your carrying a girl its high dont know what am having yet.

Was your 20 week scan ok?x

EMS23 · 08/07/2010 11:44

I've got my 20 week scan next Tuesday so I'll be nearly 21 weeks by then. I can't wait - I've been worrying so much about miscarrying since having the amnio but in the last few days I've started to feel the baby moving which has reassured me a lot.

I'm not sure which protein it was that was elevated but I do remember the consultant mentioning that one in particular was high and as I'm having a girl, perhaps what you said is right then and that was the reason.

One thing I have thought since all of this, is that while these advances in technology and medicine are wonderful, I was hit with so many numbers and probabilities and percentages that it all started to blur for me and I wonder if I'd have been better off not knowing any of it. Saying that, if it happened the same way again, I would have another amnio as I would want to know.

I hope your 20 week scan goes well too hun - this is all so scary and nerve wracking. When is your scan?

janski31 · 08/07/2010 13:03

My scan is wed 21st i will be 19+4 just want everything to be ok and trying to think positive.

I know what you mean about all the tests and figures etc sometimes i wish i was back in my mums day where they didnt have any of this!

Ah how nice your feeling the baby move I cant wait for that!!!

Is this your first baby? it is mine I am 31.x

EMS23 · 08/07/2010 13:24

Yes, it's my first, although I have a six year old stepson so it's not my DH's first. I worried he'd be a know it all about pregnancy etc.. but apparently he can't remember anything from last time round - typical man!!

I had an amnio with no4,and i found it painless, whether its just me,when the needle went in,it felt like someone pinching the top of my skin, but once in i didnt feel anything, was too busy looking at the monitor with the baby on.

The nurse couldnt believe how calm i was,and hubby sat the other side holding my hand.went home and stayed in bed 2 days .no reason i just felt safe there..went out on day and mowed the lawn, and thought well if i miscarry lying in bed wont help, then worried because i felt so good..

got a good result back and went on to have a healthy 8lb 10oz boy..

elizabethsmum · 11/07/2010 16:35

thanks lilimamma- that is reassuring to hear!

lullabellesmummy · 16/07/2010 09:38

Thanks lullabelles mummy that means a lot!- apart from ringing mum and texting a few people- I have got straight online to find this thread!!!

The amnio went fine thanks and was not too painful- the second needle hurt a bit more than the first- but nothing too bad thankfully. I felt quite calm about the whole thing, I think it was just a releif to be getting on with it TBH.

The Dr had a good look over both baies and couldn't see any obvious problems which was tremendously reassurring in itself. The results of the amnio are prob not back until at least 4pm on tue so will let you know ASAP.

Hope your 20 week scan went well EMS23 and wishing you luck for next Wed Janski31. Have you had your scan yet lullabelles mummy?

EMS23 · 16/07/2010 11:38

Elizabethsmum - I'm so pleased to hear your amnio went well and the babies are looking good. I will be thinking of you and hoping you get good results on Tuesday.

My 20 week scan went really well - the sonographer was lovely and when she saw I'd had an amnio she gave me 20 photo's instead of the standard 3 because "ladies who have amnio's deserve special treatment"! I felt quite tearful!
No bad things were indicated on the scan so am finally feeling relaxed and more in tune with my pregnancy.

I'll be away next week but will look for the thread when I'm back to see how you got on.

Just wanted to let you all know the good news- had the initial results back- just- and all fine with both twins!! I had been told to ring at 4pm today so when the consultant rang and hour and a half early I thought I would be sick as was convinced she was ringing me personally to break bad news!

Rand Dh and got him out of a meeting- he said he couldn't go back in as he was crying!

Just want to thank everyone so much for al your support- it has been so helpful to talk to others in the same position.

I am also sending positive vibes to you janski31 for your scan tomorrow- I will be thinking of you xx

elizabethsmum · 20/07/2010 14:46

ps great news Lullabells mum- it looks like we are also having at leat one boy!

lullabellesmummy · 20/07/2010 20:56

elizabethsmum - That is great news! Congrats! How many weeks are you now? I was so shocked when they told me it was a boy (not sure why because it can only be one or the other!). When will you find out the sex of twin 2? x

OP posts:
elizabethsmum · 22/07/2010 04:58

sorry about the early hour- can't sleep!! I we think that the other twin may be a girl! This will obv be confirmed by amnio and 20 wk scan- am now nearly 18 wks!

I was also a bit shocked it was a boy like you- think it is because I expected to have two girls as we already have DD and mainly girls in the family!

elizabethsmum · 17/08/2010 20:37

Hi all- hope everyone is doing well. Just to update- am now 21+ weeks and have had detailed scan and all appears to be well. Also full amnio results were all clear. We are expecting a boy & girl!

Thanks to everyone for all your support it has really helped :)

lullabellesmummy · 18/08/2010 08:58

elizabethsmum - that really is fantastic news. Thank you for the update. Wow a boy and a girl! Your dd must be over the moon at one of each! Ditto your support comment x
