I know that you are not supposed to drink sugary, fizzy drinks as they are bad for you, but they really help with the nausea, so I let myself.

However, I just bought a pack of the little mixer cans of coke (I can never drink a full can) and now I am worried I will harm the baby by drinking them. I don't drink coffee and only ever have decaf tea (although not at the mo as it makes me feel yuck), don't smoke, no alcohol and have gone off chocolate.

My caffeine intake is very small, but if I drink one or two of these mini cans of coke a day, would I be doing any major harm? I plan to stop with all the crap food once the nausea eases obviously, but for now it gets me through the day.

oh my god chill out!!!!!
if you saw what I consume god knows that you'd say

watch some Mad Men!

PickleSarnie · 25/06/2010 10:33

Oh goodness no. EVERYONE knows that potatoes are the worst. They make babies have two heads (nobbly potato shaped heads)

SirBoobAlot · 25/06/2010 10:34

I lived on fizzy drinks, crisps and apples to get through my morning sickness. Chill out!

skihorse · 25/06/2010 10:35

runnybottom - Nooooo! I once spent my last euro on a peach ice-lolly - only to discover it was an ICE-TEA peach lolly. I threw it in the hedge before I was even home. Vile stuff.

picklesarnie - and the eyes! All the eyes, everywhere EYES!

runnybottom · 25/06/2010 10:42

that sound lovely! I'd like one of those now!

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2010 10:42

Oh for crying out loud. No wonder the government thinks that pregnant women need strict 'guidelines' about what not to eat, if a grown woman cannot muster up the judgement to realise that a small can of coke is not harmful.

gorionine · 25/06/2010 10:45

When I was pregnant with DD1 the only thing that I would keep in was coke and carrots for the first 6 months (added Malteesers after that). It did not do her any arm (exept maybe that "orangy" skinn colour of hers)

skihorse · 25/06/2010 11:03

gorionine - awww... she'll make a terrific WAG! That's what little girls aspire to isn't it? I'm disgusted you ate Maltesers though - honeycomb comes from bees and as any fool knows, eating honey during pregnancy will make your child allergic to "everything".

gorionine · 25/06/2010 11:12

Yes skihorse, I am a bit ashamed of myself but then I think that all those flowers goodness in the honey, they are a bit like fruits non? so I think the healthiness outweighs the dangers!

skihorse · 25/06/2010 11:20

Yes, but flowers grow in DIRT! i.e., tetanus, bacteria and DIRT! And cats poo in dirt!

legallyblond · 25/06/2010 11:32

I haven't read this whole thread but nearly choked with laughter on my coffee when I read the OP! A small can of coke?!?!

If the OP were in the first trimester and had just downed 10 espressos and munched 2 big bars of dark chocolate (lots of caffeine in that), I would agree..... I too would feel a little worried and hope all would be okay... (I have read that lots of caffeine is not great in early pregnancy and can increase the risk of miscarriage).

BUT, a small can of coke?! I have had a coffee or two a day without a second thought! Plus fizzy drinks if I felt too sick for anything else!

Puh-lease!

HelenaCC · 25/06/2010 11:46

Just to remind you, nows your chance to get that dental care so you dont need to worry so much about your coke habit - its free during pregnancy, get applying for your maternity exemption and make a dentist appointment!!

gorionine · 25/06/2010 11:49

Skihorse, maybe a should eat a couple of Milton Wipes? just to balance it all?

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2010 11:53

My SIL is pregnant and has a friend (30s, professional) who was wringing her hands because she had a craving for oranges and was worried about Vit C overdose.

Do they hand our stupidity tablets at the first midwife appointment nowadays?

gorionine · 25/06/2010 11:57

"maybe I should eat..."

skihorse · 25/06/2010 11:57

gorionine - Are they organic? I'm not sure I could eat anything which wasn't fully biodegradeable and farmed by Mennonites. Won't somebody think of the children? How many calories are in the paper bag - my midwife told me if I put on more than 18lbs it's illegal.

Wtf GetOrfMoiLand - you can't be serious?

Now I know I've somewhat a of a laissez-faire attitude towards this whole pregnancy "lark" but christ on a bike...

skihorse · 25/06/2010 11:58

Really? Vit C overdose you say? I mainlined orange juice for the first trimester. He's still alive.

PickleSarnie · 25/06/2010 12:06

I'm getting myself a hermetically sealed bubble to live in for the next 3 months to live in just in case.

You can never be too careful.

differentnameforthis · 25/06/2010 12:06

I was addicted to coke with my 2 girls. They are fine.

gorionine · 25/06/2010 12:08

ROFL at "organic" antibacterial wipes!

Skihorse, you are not supposed to eat the bag, it is just for you to breath in! (and I thought I was greedy but if you are really concerned go there.

Oh no! The paper bag jammed it!

ThatVikRinA22 · 25/06/2010 12:13

i dont think when i had my youngest any of these daft eating guidelines were around. i ate whatever the heck i fancied, with both of my pregnancies with no adverse effects at all.

i had no idea you couldnt eat shop bought salads or soft cheese, and i even had the odd half glass of wine now and then.

i think your body tells you what is ok and what isnt - if you fancy it then eat it i say!

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2010 12:13

Yes, serious wrt Vit C - she was eating about 15 oranges a day.

My SIL told her not to be so damn silly.

I take berocca every day which has 800% RDA of Vit C - strangely enough I am still functioning well.

I know there is a load of information out there which may be confusing, but fgs people can still apply some basic common sense, can't they?

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2010 12:18

I hate all this NO pate (because of excessive Vit A - as long as you are not mainlining the stuff i am sure you will be OK) and NO soft cheese (when did you last hear of anyone, let alone a pregnant woman, get listeria).

And NO shelffish - presumably because of food poisoning. I had campylobacter poisoning whilst pregnant - probably from a takeaway sandwich - and although it was deeply unpleasant, I was fine, as most people would be.

There is no need to be so over zealous during pregnancy. Just chill out about it all.

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2010 12:18

Ooh where did that particular soap box come from?

PrettyCandles · 25/06/2010 12:20

"The only reason I worried is I caught sight of an article on another site that said taking in too much caffeine can slow your babies growth rate."

I'm not normally a Coke drinker, but crave the stuff when heavily pregnant. My babies were 8lb10oz, 9lb3oz and 11lb. If the Coke slowed their growth-rate, then all I can say is "Thank goodness!".

I think you'd need to drink a lot of Coke to put your baby at risk.

Drink, and don't worry.
