Just drank small (mixer) can of coke....now worried!

I know that you are not supposed to drink sugary, fizzy drinks as they are bad for you, but they really help with the nausea, so I let myself.

However, I just bought a pack of the little mixer cans of coke (I can never drink a full can) and now I am worried I will harm the baby by drinking them. I don't drink coffee and only ever have decaf tea (although not at the mo as it makes me feel yuck), don't smoke, no alcohol and have gone off chocolate.

My caffeine intake is very small, but if I drink one or two of these mini cans of coke a day, would I be doing any major harm? I plan to stop with all the crap food once the nausea eases obviously, but for now it gets me through the day.

can't be that bad. A lot of prem babies are prescribed caffeine when they are born

susiecutiebananas · 24/06/2010 16:32

BLimey, I didn't even think about how much tea or coffee I drank while I was Pg ( after I could stomach it again!)

Just relax for goodness sake, there are FAR more important legitimate things to worry about not eating when you are pg than caffeine in coke!

i.e. pate, un- pasteurized cheese ( due to the legitimate risks of listeria) etc etc sadly, every year more are added to the list!

Just drink those cokes and stop worrying.

As a NNU nurse at various stages in my nursing career, watching a baby withdrawing from street drugs such as heroin cocaine crack, etc etc.. I've never yet had a baby with a caffeine problem.

anythingwithagiraffeonit · 24/06/2010 16:36

I really hope this is a joke :p I have about three cans a day.. sometimes 4... its all that keeps me from being sick right now!

susiecutiebananas · 24/06/2010 16:37

sorry, meant to say then, watching a baby withdrawing from the drugs i named above, is an incredibly traumatic thing. The thing you'll find the strangest or, most unlikely, that most ( not all) but certainly most, of these withdrawing babies are good birth-weight, gorgeous, otherwise healthy babies, so just consider what they've had pumped into their systems in-utero.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 24/06/2010 16:39

I lived on lilt when I was pregnant with my ds as I felt sick all day for monhts and it was one of the few things that I could bear. Didn't do me or ds any harm.

japhrimel · 24/06/2010 17:29

Fwiw, whilst small amounts of caffeine are generally considered fine, higher intake of caffeine does raise your risk of miscarriage and having a low birth weight baby. And an American study not long ago concluded that even small amounts of caffeine raise your risk of miscarriage slightly.

It's not a question of babies having neonatal withdrawal, but there are other risks!

But 2 mini cans of cola should be fine. Watch your teeth though - I know I struggled to clean my teeth well with the nausea.

Rocklover · 24/06/2010 18:55

God, from your answers I realise that my stupid panic made me look like a right plonker. I promise I'm not usually so uptight .

I am going to have another can in a bit and then clean my teeth ALOT!

Ikboo !!!

Now I really really want a twix

PickleSarnie · 24/06/2010 19:23

Rocklover, on another board someone has just asked if its okay to eat a gingerbread man. A biscuit?! And I think they were serious. So at least your concern is a million times less crazy than theirs.

shimmerysilverglitter · 24/06/2010 19:29

Don't worry OP. I remember phoning my dd's dad sobbing with fear about a week after I found out I was pregnant with her because I had had fresh grated nutmeg on a spinach gratin a couple of weeks before and then read on the internet that nutmeg can cause miscarriages.

shimmerysilverglitter · 24/06/2010 19:29

in vast quantities.

sungirltan · 24/06/2010 19:38

aww op stop fretting right now. i was lving off coke when pregnant with dd who is now 8 months - she is a textbook prefect baby and always has been.

you might want to lay off the coke post brith as it can make the baby fuss at the breast but in moderation - whatever gets you through the pregnancy!

vmcd28 · 24/06/2010 20:00

there are other articles that say low caffeine can lead to miscarriage! just have what you like, within reason, and there will be no harm done.

vmcd28 · 24/06/2010 20:06

PS, what I meant is the artocle stated that too low levels of caffeine can cause miscarriage. i.e. all the info seems to contradict, so you do what you feel you want to do, and thats all anyone can ask!!

amothersplaceisinthewrong, Lilt doesnt have any caffeine in it!

choufleur · 24/06/2010 20:07

God i drank coke. the only thing that kept me awake at work in the afternoons.

skihorse · 25/06/2010 07:37

picklesarnie My eyes are about to roll out of my head. Pray tell, what is the "fear" about the gingerbread man? The only possible thing I can think of is the "eating his soul" bit and the gingerbread man will live through her child a la Chucky!

Btw - Dutch research this week suggests those who ingest caffeine are healthier than those who don't.

Oh, and HUGE thanks to the person who has reminded me a of Lilt - a drink I've not been able to source for 10 years and now I'm going to have a tantrum and it's going to sail straight to number one of cravings which must be satisfied today!

mustrunmore · 25/06/2010 07:44

With ds1 I ate 100% pefectly during pg. I still looked ok, lost the weight after, and we was 7lb 14.

With ds2 I ate far more, and drank tons and tons of coke. I found it impossible to lose the weight after. And when he was born he was all shakiy from caffeine withdrawl, really badly.

Having said that, a little bit wont have any effect at all.

Relax

Wanderingsheep · 25/06/2010 08:14

Don't worry OP! In my last pregnancy I read something about high VOC paint and the effects on babies lungs after DP had been glossing our kitchen door. I rang my sister in tears worrying that I had damaged my poor babies lungs by inhaling the fumes! My sister's response? "you are being ridiculous!" DD is three and her lungs are fine!

PickleSarnie · 25/06/2010 10:00

skihorse, I KNEW I shouldn't have ventured onto a board with sparkly tickers. There was a post about "is it okay to eat chinese food" which I thought was ridiculous enough but the gingerbread man one literally took the biscuit!

runnybottom · 25/06/2010 10:16

Ski, where are you that you can't find Lilt? Want me to send you a can?

skihorse · 25/06/2010 10:20

picklesarnie - Aha! The real reason why the Chinese are limited to only one child! Chinese food kills baybees!

runnybottom (interesting handle btw! ) - I'm in The Netherlands. They love ice tea - but Lilt is unknown here. [hot salty tears]. I will try and cope - anyway - I heard the pineapple flavour in Lilt will kill my baby/make me miscarry/go in to labour early/ensure the baby has a Jamaican accent.

PickleSarnie · 25/06/2010 10:20

Now the same poster on the other forum is asking if it's okay to eat strawberries?!?!

The only possible reason I can think of when strawberries would be bad for you would be if you soaked them in paint stripper and then dipped them in heroin first

skihorse · 25/06/2010 10:21

Fuck me. What the bollocks is she eating on a day-to-day basis? Tinned & boiled potatoes?

skihorse · 25/06/2010 10:23

Mmmmn heroin! So moreish though.

runnybottom · 25/06/2010 10:28

I'd swap Lilt availabilty for easy access to proper iced tea...I love peach iced tea! I'm in Ireland, tea comes hot, in mugs and anything else is suspiciously continental.

Yes, what do people eat when they ask these insane questions?
