Maternity Clothes

Sorry if this question sounds really dumb but ...

I'm just looking on asos.com at the maternity clothes, before I was pregnant I was a size 10 but what size should I be buying now at 27 weeks? I have put on around 14lb in weight which seems to be just mainly on my stomach and my legs and bum have got a bit fatter, surely I can't still be a 10 everywhere else? Do people tend to buy a bigger size than what they were before they got pregnant when buying maternity clothes? eg. Although I was a 10 would it best for me to buy a 12 - 14 now? ... I told you it was a dumb question but I can't see how a 10 will fit me ( I realise that the stomach part will be a lot bigger than a 10 but surely we put on weight everywhere else too?)

I think the general rule is that you buy maternity clothes in the size that you were before pregnancy because they allow for the weight gain. So you would probably find that a 12-14 would be ENORMOUS on you if you are usually a 10. 14lbs is not that much - you might even find that a 10 is too big. And it depends on the make - I tried something on from JoJoMaman and it was HUGE, whereas M&S in the same size fitted fine.

It completely depends on the brand, NJC. Some seem to allow for the fact that women tend to have bigger boobs, bums, hips, thighs etc and some don't.

I am a non-pg size 10/12 , but have put on weight in the aforementioned areas, and have had to buy a huge range of sizes in maternity wear.

If it helps...

H&M Mama - comes up TINY! I have to buy a medium (12-14) or a large (16-18 I think - WTF??).

Next - I am in the same size as I would normally be in their non-maternity - I have bought some 10, some 12. Ditto Topshop.

Blooming Marvellous - mostly comes up quite big, I am a 10 in most of their stuff.

JoJoMamanBebe - varies, 10 or a 12.

New Look - comes up a bit small (but then so does their non-mat stuff I find) I have some 12s, some 14s.

Thank you! Think I might be best actually going to a shop and trying things on then rather than ordering online.

At 20 weeks preg I tried on a pair of maternity jeans in my usual size and there was no way they were going over my bum. Got the next size up.

Probably with jersey dresses etc you would be ok in your pre-preg size, since they tend to be more stretchy all over anyway, but in my experience jeans and trousers are more hit and miss.

Also depends if you like your clothes more clingy or more loose.

I'm going to buy a quite expensive dress online for 3 weddings this summer and not sure what size to get, so will watch this thread with interest.

WOW - thanks for the info Jacksmybaby! Good to know!

PixieCake · 24/06/2010 16:33

Jacksmybaby (or anyone else!) - any idea about Tiffany Rose sizes?

Jacksmybaby · 24/06/2010 16:56

No, sorry!

Mamas and Papas size 12 jeans I grew out of v quickly - not good if you have big thighs. Next boyfriend jeans in a 12, far more generous really nice cut and fit (for me)

It's like all clothes - you really need to try stuff on as different brands have wildly different cuts.

Good luck finding a pair of mat jeans that don't fall down all the time

auburnlizzy78 · 24/06/2010 17:46

Got some jeans from H&M - about two sizes bigger than my normal jeans size. They are AWESOME, and don't fall down at all!

MadameG · 24/06/2010 18:05

H&M Maternity jeans are pretty good comfort-wise, but you will have to size up a size or two- however don't be alarmed because elsewhere you'll be your pre-pregnancy size.

I've got a ton of tops and dresses from ASOS and Dorothy Perkins in my normal size (12-14) and they all fit great. I'm 28 weeks right now.

Hi Pixie cake - I have recently bought a tiffany rose dress. I ordered my normal size and it was a bit tight on the boobs - but i am big busted for my size anyway - plus have gone up 4 cup sizes, so i think i should have thought of that earlier. I went a size up and it was fine.

Their clothes are lovely, though. It was worth the effort. And their returns were really quick. I am now a Tiffany Rose fan. Pity I don't have enough events to wear their clothes to!

JennyPiccolo · 27/06/2010 19:03

i bought some stuff on asos, i found that the dresses and tops were fine in my usual size, but i bought a pair of jeans (allegedly jeggings but were actually black jeans when arrived) that only fitted me for a couple of weeks.

So, aye, don't buy the jeans online, they're all different and you'd be better trying them on.
