No, it'll be your bowel
I was incredibly bloated with DC2, I looked about 4/5 months gone at 6 weeks!

Lulabel27 · 22/06/2010 21:15

I'm not sure as this is my first but I'm 8+4 and gutted at how big I seem to be I'm a size 12 (5ft 6) so pretty average size and my stomach seems huge - my trousers are tight already. I've only put on 2lbs so am really confused....

dmre · 22/06/2010 21:32

your baby is the size of a pin head right now!

FrazzleRock · 22/06/2010 21:46

congratulations by the way!

saltnvinigarcrips · 22/06/2010 23:26

Hmm, this is my first too and i am pretty petite height wise and usually a size 8/10 so I'm feeling a bit worried about the size of my expanding belly too. Only 9 weeks but look like 5 months! Think it is a mixture of bloating and constipation (tmi) rather than a sign of anything being in there.

Lulabel27 · 23/06/2010 00:11

Thanks - I hope it is bloating is there anything I can take/do for it?

japhrimel · 23/06/2010 08:21

Fennel tea can be great for bloating - it'll make the trapped wind come out though!

Do remember that although the baby is tiny in the early stages, your uterus grows far faster and this will be the first sign of a bump.

anonMum2 · 23/06/2010 09:23

Mine started showing at 5 weeks this time due to bloating, though I can feel my uterus stretching too (TMI). Really upset as I look like a fatty. With DC I had nothing till 20 weeks, then ballooned.

I take it we can drink Fennel, Peppermint tea etc? I've been avoiding them as I've had MCs before so always play it extra safe.

Miffster · 23/06/2010 09:37

DON'T TAKE FENNEL. Herbs can be powerful medecine. Ancient cultures used fennel seeds as a contraceptive and it doe shave an effect on the female organs, so drinking lots of tea, when you are not sure how strong the tea is, is best avoided.

'^Culinary herbs (basil, oregano, etc.) usually are safe in the small amounts used in cooking, but not in larger doses used for teas. Anthraquinone laxatives stimulate muscle, including the uterus, possibly causing miscarriage. Uterine stimulants should be avoided for the same reason. Alkaloids, bitter principles or essential oils should be avoided because they affect functions in the mom-to-be's body as well as in the fetus. Abortifacients also might cause miscarriage. Emmenagogues promote and regulate menstruation, which should be avoided during pregnancy.

If you have questions about an herb or what is a safe amount, avoid the herb or ask an herbal practitioner or homeopathic doctor.

Mint tea should be ok though. I have been eating dried apricots and prunes, and soaking prunes overnight in boiling water and drinking the juice for constipation. Natural bio yog has helped with bloating, as has eating everythign more slowly and chewing it more than I usually bother to do.

Congratulations on your pregnancy

vmcd28 · 23/06/2010 09:50

it'll be bloating, but I also remember reading somewhere that you put on weight easily for the first few weeks, as a "reserve" preparation for the future.
And remember, it's not just the size of the baby that determines your size - otherwise no-one would show until they were at least 16 weeks

legallyblond · 23/06/2010 10:24

At this stage I think it probably just bloating. I am 26 weeks with my first - I felt like I was "showing" from about 6 weeks as my tummy seemed bigger and clothes seemed tighter, but when I actually started showing at about 16 weeks, I realised it looks totally different to a bloated tummy! More like a small ball - much neater and can't really be confused with anything else.

I did put on some weight in the first trimester, about 4 lbs I think by 13 weeks, but that has now sky rocketed! I have gained over a stone and a half but it looks (I hope!) like its all on my tummy!

I found very small meals helped with the bloating. Literally, just a snack... but lots of snacks!

pinkdelight · 23/06/2010 12:33

Point taken about the bloating and baby-size, but don't you also get that weird thing where the top part of your tummy below your bra gets harder and seems to start sticking out a bit? I definitely had that around 15 weeks last time and seem to be getting it already around 12 weeks this time. Definitely makes it look more like I'm showing, plus the fact that I'm fatter this time doesn't help matters!

Miffster · 23/06/2010 12:40

Am 15 weeks, was bloated from week 5, but am now definitely showing and am in maternity wear as everything else is uncomfortable or looks stupid.

vmcd28 · 23/06/2010 14:01

yes, the bit at your ribs seems to change, for some reason. I assume it's cos your bowel and other organs are starting to get shoved upwards, but i'm not really sure. I had that early on too
