Sleeping on my back - how much of a problem is it?

Every night I prop myself up with various pillows and cushions so that I fall asleep on my left hand side, partly becasue I know that is the "optimum" position for sleeping and partly becasue its comfortable! I put a cushion behind my back, one between my knees and a small one under my bump. Sometimes I seem to stay in that position all night, but increasingly, I wake up and I have turned and been sleeping on my back (which is my natural, non-pregnant sleeping position). it doesn't seem too uncomfortable when I wake, but, once awake, I instinctively turn onto my side, which seems a bit more comfy.

Am I accidentally causing damage by sleeping on my back? I don't mind if it gives me back ache (seems not to have done yet), but does it cut off the blood supply to the baby or something? I don't know what to do as I am doing it in my sleep Really worrried that its harming the baby somehow....

It sounds like you might be waking up because you're lying on your back and it's starting to make you uncomfortable. Most experts seem to say that if you're having issues with lying on your back, you will naturally change position, as you're doing. If it's not uncomfortable, you're probably not putting much pressure on major blood vessels. I find that if I lie on my back for more than a minute or so I start to get sick and dizzy and uncomfortable and so really want to move!

TBH I wouldn't stress about it too much.

Thanks Japhrimel - I am waking up in the morning and discovering that I have been sleeping onmy back, so I don't think that sleeping on my back is what's waking me up.... which is why I worry that, without realisng, I am causing harm...

Legallyblond I wake up on my back all the time, tbh I think that your body will soon tell you if it's not happy. I doubt you'll be doing any harm, your baby is well protected in there and it will take what it needs from you regardless. Why don't you get one of those dream geni pregnancy pillows, they're meant to help keep you on your side. I did ask my Midwife about it and she said as long as I was comfy, she wasn't too concerned.
