4 lots of blood taken at 12 week scan

Does anyone know why?

I had a letter today telling me they were unable to test the blood they took as it was 'mis-labeled' and so I have to go back so they can check what blood group I am. Apart from blood group, what else do they need the blood for? I had nuchal scan separately so know it's not that.

rubella and the mother's immunity, blood type as you say, and any possible issues with incompatibility with baby, AIDS/HIV (think you need to give consent?), anaemia possibly

Ah right, that makes sense. I had an aids test and Hep C etc when I was going through the IVF. It's a bit silly they have to test again, a bit of a waste of money. I hope they don't need to take 4 lots again.

Many health authorities are now doing the combined screening for Down's Syndrome. I had mine a few weeks ago - scan plus bloods. It is something along the lines of they measure the nuchal fold, measure hormone levels in the blood and then plug all the data into a computer programme and then your risk information comes from the combined information. Could it be that?

It is more accurate than the scan alone.

they took truckloads of blood from me at that point. They test everything then, and do the triple test (for genetic abnormalities)bloods along with rubella immunity, hep a/b/poss c,HIV,The works.

Not the nuchal as they don't do it here on the NHS and I had to pay. It would be too late now anyway as I am over 14 weeks.

Maybe the triple test although my Midwife asked if I wanted it and then didn't put me down to have it as I was going to have the nuchal elsewhere.
