thyroxin in pregnancy

hi - I have an slight underactive thyroid and take thyroxin (25mg) a day - Thyroid was checked before falling pregnant and all ok - I am now 9 weeks and wondered if It should be checked before my 3 months bloods - can it go to over active?

Any advice would be great

Most women need more thyroxin in early pregnancy and best to keep TSH around 1 (ie between 0.5 and 2) during pregnancy - and it should be checked monthly. Unlikely to go overactive, more likely that it will be more underactive.

In my first pregnancy my dose was eventually tripled from 50mcg to 150mcg.

Go to GP ASAP for blood test - my had gone from normal at 5 weeks (0.89) on 50mcg to 13.8 at 8 weeks.

Thanks - thought my GP lack of concern was worrying, she was like oh just keep taking it. Really annoys me that I have to be the one to ask for a blood test - will go tomorrow x

Yes, this has come up before on this board - responses from doctors vary. My consultant recommended upping the dose by 25mcg as soon as I got BFP, and then monthly tests thereafter.

Can see that as you are on such a low pre-pregnancy dose they would not recommend that (I was going from 100mcg to 125mcg) but worth being tested to put mind as ease.

My dose was increased again when my TSH crept slightly above 2.

I had a hemithroidectomy due to a benign lump about 10 years ago. And although my thyroid levels have always been absolutely fine (seems the other half of the gland is doing a good job) at my booking in appointment at 12 weeks the MW flagged this and referred me to the obstetrics consultant. Since then I've been monitored with blood tests twice so far, with another one due in a couple of weeks and am being referred for a glucose tolerance test - apparently a dodgy thyroid can increase the likelihood of gestational diabetes.
Advice from MumNWLondon is good - can you see another GP at the practice if you think you will get fobbed off? Invent a couple of symptoms (that can be put down to something else if your levels are OK)? Good luck and congratulations.

I was taking 75mcg, went to GP as soon as got BFP and she upped it to 100mcg - had had blood test a couple of weeks before getting BFP (just coincidental) and TSH was 3.3, so am glad she put it up. I would have insisted, though, as have had previous m/cs which may have been related. I am having another blood test next week to see how things are on the new dose - if it is still over 2, will ask for another increase. Have also been referred to endocrinologist immediately rather than after the first trimester - mainly because I am now a stroppy cow and make demands.

I have been referred to a consultant because of my thyroid with both pgs but that might be because I am on quite a high dose normally (150mcg, upped to 175 during pg). Weird that policy on this seems to vary so much. I agree with others that you should ask GP for blood test and also whether he/she thinks you need to be referred.

Just spoke to a friend of mine as had got myself seriously worried that I was depriving baby of thyroxin and she seems to think like you mumNWL that due to taking such a low dose they wouldn't look to up it and as had no symptoms not to worry too much, but will still go to GP tomorrow and ask for test to see - Thanks all
