When is it normal to feel the baby move? And, er... what does it feel like?

I felt baby move for certain at 20 wks - just after my scan. Prior to this I'd had a few fluttery feelings but couldn't be sure if it was wind.

It's difficult to put into words what it felt like but it is a very specific kind of feeling that you'll just know is your baby kicking/moving as it's not really like anything else (once you've got past the fluttery wind like sensations)

MissMarjoribanks · 14/06/2010 19:29

I felt it very early - at 13 weeks. At that stage it felt like little flutters - almost tickles that brushed against the lower sides of my abdomen.

At about 20 weeks I felt the first proper kick. That's like a sharp prod from the inside.

i'm 21 wks (with first) and i'm just experiencing strong flutterings, I'd say a bit like wriggly snakes! I'm still waiting for a kick though. I'd agree with happydays that you know when its different to gas movements

Rinnyx · 14/06/2010 19:42

It depends from person to person and if its your first or not.

With DD I felt her at about 6 months but with DC2 who I am 19 weeks with right now I felt at 14 and half weeks, at first it felt like small bubbles popping

PaulineCampbellJones · 14/06/2010 19:49

It's the best feeling in the world! I felt mine about 20 weeks as well, kind of like a butterfly.

barkfox · 14/06/2010 19:52

I'm pregnant with my 1st, and didn't feel anything I could identify as baby movement until about 22 weeks. And got quite worried that this seemed quite late. I think now I had been having the odd sensation now and then before that but not thought it was the baby.

For me, it really did feel like gas bubbles, or a bit of trapped wind passing through my gut. No pain at all, just a momentary feeling of pressure. The fact that this wasn't followed by general fartiness made me think, hang on...

25 weeks onwards I was getting distinct rolls and kicks, which were markedly different from gas bubble sensations.

nunnie · 14/06/2010 19:56

With DD I can't remember is that a bad thing to admit?

With this one, was the evening after my 20 week scan (19+4), you will know when it is baby movements they feel very different like a fluttery sensation. I feel numb apart from this sensation it is very odd but also very magical.

I have an anterior placenta, which apparently reading on here can cause a delay in feeling movements. I tend to feel the further down rather than central.

FourEyesGood · 14/06/2010 20:17

I'm pregnant with my second child, and started feeling movement at about 16 weeks this time (like nunnie, I can't remember at what stage I felt kicks last time! Probably 20 weeks or so). It's a very low-down fluttering, usually irregularly, except when (I think) s/he has hiccups, which is a very strange rhythmic sensation.

ro4chat · 14/06/2010 20:34

I started feeling something at about 15 weeks. It was just like a pulsating sensation, but not a regular intervals and closer to the surface, unlike wind related fluttering. Now at 19+4 it's quite a strong kicking session, normally near my navel. Mine is specially active after meals or if I've eaten something sweet.
My DH can't wait to feel it from the outside. Does anybody know when that happens?

nymphadora · 14/06/2010 20:40

13 weeks this time (dc3) and it was like bubbles, then something like brushing across my stomach.More definate kicks now(21.5) but not strong yet (prods?). Baby seemed to discover my bladder a couple of weeks ago and get definate pokes there.

If you are over weight and/or have an anterior placenta its supposed to be later. I have both this time but I think I knew what to expect hence the feeling it earlier

Tinasan · 14/06/2010 20:47

I felt movement around 16 weeks with first, and a bit earlier with number 2. It is like bubbles or flutter at first. It's a lot lower than you think it will be though, not in your tummy but just above your bikini line! Anything you feel actually in your stomach in the early stages is wind...

hellymelly · 14/06/2010 20:53

16-17 with the first,14 with the second. You feel the second or subsequent child sooner than the first, for some reason.

mylittlemonkey · 14/06/2010 21:35

Not for definate until around 20 weeks despite being desperate to feel something much sooner. I did feel many things that could have been baby moving in weeks before but i was not definate it was baby until 20 weeks. I can remember the exact moment so clearly even now.

I dont know how best to describe what it feels like other than totally amazing - esp. when you feel your baby moving for the first time. Makes me want to get PG again even though DS still only 3 months old. Enjoy!!

Chelle1986 · 15/06/2010 08:22

I think it feels like, you know when you get a trapped nerve in your leg and it twitches? Like that but stronger.

I am 26 weeks now and have been feeling him moving about since about 22 weeks, gradually getting stronger day by day.

SoozleQ · 15/06/2010 13:25

I agree, I think it feels a bit like when you have a muscle twitch.

I first felt faint twitches at about 18 weeks - thought it could be wind at first but then didn't have the subsequent fart and figured it wasn't.

Now 22 weeks and definitely feeling much more movement - very wriggly baby. Other half can feel the kicks from the outside and you can even see them when the kicks are higher up or at the side. I dread to think what they'll feel like towards the end!
