I am 19 weeks, and have gained 8lb in total. Does anyone know whether this is normal or abnormal? How does it compare with others? I have no idea!!

That doesn't sound like much. Everybody is different though and it depends on what your weight was to start with as to what is a 'healthy' amount to put on. If you were bigger to start with then you don't need to put quite so much on etc.

I am 23 weeks and have put on 1st 5lbs so far. I was within the 'normal' BMI range before getting pregnant.

I would check with your midwife and see what they say. As long as your baby is growing at a good rate then I'm sure it is fine.

Hope you can get the reassurance you need.

I'm sure it's fine - I didn't really put on any weight until the third trimester. I'm 33 weeks now and have put on about 10kgs/22lbs.

ChunkyPickle · 14/06/2010 16:35

I didn't put on anything until about 30 weeks - but then I'm definitely podgy.

None of the people I saw thought it was bad - in fact they were all very pleased with me (once I assured them that I wasn't going hungry, that I was eating when I felt the urge)

2-4 lb in first 12 weeks (although I put on more than this and at 33 weeks and now 'under' what I should be). Then 1 lb a week after that is apparently average.

Olivetti · 14/06/2010 16:37

Thanks for replying. I found a website that said it is around average...who knows though!

I'm 33 weeks and have put on 18lbs btw. Weight and height before preg = 9st 6lb, 5ft 5ins. Weight now 10st 10lbs. I think my BMI WAS 21.5. Dunno if this helps

Olivetti · 14/06/2010 16:42

duejuly - hey, we are nearly exactly the same. Weight and height before = 9st 5lb, 5 5ins.

Hi Olivetti I am 16w and gained 7 pounds hoping that is ok too! I don't think you have anything to worry about with 8 pounds. I was normal BMI before and trying to exercise/ eat healthily just hungrier than normal - it's gone to the three B's - Bum, Bump and Boobs!

ILoveGregoryHouse · 14/06/2010 16:43

Have put on 16lbs. Am 20 weeks and this is my fourth. So am on for a weight gain of around 2.5 stones (I always gain early due to horrid nausea relieved only by constant scoffing of buttered toast and slow down a bit in second trimester) which is what I have always had in pregnancy. 2 stones is a good guide I think so you look like you're on for that. As long as you're eating well, feel well and the scans show good baby growth, don't worry

SeoMum · 14/06/2010 16:46

Hi I found some interesting calculators on the babycentre website (although doesn't always work)The US one works better but you have to work out your weight in pounds!
I think it depends on if you were normal, overweight or underweight when you were pregnant. I am a bit concerned as I am 12 weeks and lost half a stone from feeling sick and not being able to eat food.
From what I have read 8 lbs is ok they say first timester about 5lbs then approx 1 lb a week in the 2nd trimester.
I'm no expert though hopefully someone with better qualifications can advise.

SeoMum · 14/06/2010 16:54

Just read everyones comments and a bit concerned about my weight loss, I have got bigger boobs and a slight bump but lost weight on my face, arms and legs.
I am trying to eat healthily but can't always stomach food whenever I cut out alcohol (not that I am a booze hound just enjoy a glass or 2 of wine most nights before I was pg) I usually lose a few pounds so hoping that has contributed. I am 5'8" and was 9st6lbs now 8st12lbs from finding out I was pregnant about 6 weeks ago should I be concerned?
Most of my friends have told me they lost weight at first too.

ellabella2 · 14/06/2010 17:49

SeoMum I really woudn't worry about having lost some weight during your 1st trimester. You will probably do some catching up once the nausea hopefully eases. I think just eating as balanced and healthy a diet as possible like you are, your baby will be getting everything that it needs.

SeoMum · 14/06/2010 17:51

Thanks ellabella2 I'm prob just worrying too much as it is my first

ILoveGregoryHouse · 14/06/2010 19:33

SeoMum, my friend was so ill with her second pg that she weighed less after she gave birth than before she got pregnant. Baby is fine. Lots of people lose in the first trimester due to feeling blee. Don't worry.
