Early scan-6 weeks- Heartbeat then not?

I am so annoyed. Please can any of you share similar stories, good or bad. This morning I went for an early scan, I am 6+ 2. The sonographer showed us the heartbeat right away and printed a picture. Then she poked around a bit and said she had problems locating it the second time. So we saw a consultant who basically told me they never did see it, that this is common, and come back in 14 days. How can the sonographer show us the hb then say it's not there? Has anything similar ever happened to any of you?

My symptoms are getting stronger, breasts getting more tender and feeling more sick but having had a mmc before this now means nothing to me.

I was booked for an 8-wk scan last year, then had bleeding so went on advice of our FMU for earlier scan - I think this was around 6 or 6.5wks. I was warned even before the scan that the heartbeat might not be visible - after all the fetus at that stage is TINY. So I don't know why the consultant might have told you heartbeat wasn't there when scanner had seen it and shown you - but it is common for the heartbeat NOT to be visible, and is the reason why most early scans are between 7-8 wks I think. Try to breathe deeply and not worry, it is a good sign if they did see something but not a bad sign if they did not, iyswim...

Did you see a clear heartbeat then? I cannot understand why they would say it was there and then say it wasnt.

In my case, there was a heartbeat (huge relief as with the bleeding I thought I'd lost this one) but I might have been a few days on from your dates. I didn't see a consultant, I was in direct touch with the sonographer due to problems with my previous pregnancy. So I don't know why your consultant would have said heartbeat wasn't seen, unless perhaps the sonographer was less experienced; but perhaps they were just covering their back? I know where you're coming from re mmc, and to have seen the heartbeat must have been so reassuring. I've no answers re your scan I'm afraid, but hoping that all IS well; the waiting between scans is hellish so I hope you can find distractions to help get through the time. xx

I went to A/E when I was 4 wks and was told I was having an eptopic pregnancy with no evidence at that point the doctor just went off my symptoms. I was devastated but the doctor said I would be moved to the gyne unit as it was weekend as the EPU was not open and be offered a scan.

When I got to the gyne unit I was told I couldn't have the scan as it was weekend and the scan department was not open, you can imagine my anger. Anyway I was discharged and told to come back on the monday to just take parcetamol which was a waste of time.

Went back on the monday and was told by the sonographer that I would need to have an internal camera to see anything, I agreed and then he told me that all he could see was a black hole and that maybe I was having a false pregnancy. I was shocked and devastated. I was told to come back in 3 wks time when I would be 7 wks . I can tell you the waiting was the worse thing in the world it just seemed to drag on.

Went back at 7 wks and had the scan at the EPU the sonographer not only saw the fetus but the heart beat aswell you can imagine my relief. I am now 25 weeks and although my pregnancy as not been easy I'm slowly getting there.

Dont give up hope and I wish you all the best x

My consultant wouldn't even look for it at 6 wkd 3 (have found one before) as took view that I'd it's in right place and there is a sac that is as much as you can expect for now. worrying yes as had early acan before with heartbeat but I know it's very marginal about heartbeat or not.

Wrong of them to say didn't see It after the fact though...

It's hard to find at 6 weeks - that's why it's best to wait till 8 weeks if you're being scanned for reassurrance only.

That's not good at all, but honestly from a lot of my NHS experience I guess can't expect any better from them. I'm wishing that all goes well for you because when I was 6.5 weeks with DS, I went private as I was a bit fed up of NHS at that time. They could only see a sac with possible heartbeat when they did a normal scan, but they insisted on an internal scan even though I wasn't keen which I'm glad they did now, as we could see a perfect foetus and heartbeat. Must be awful having to wait 2 more weeks.

banana87 · 14/06/2010 17:34

Oh don't worry, I'm never going back there. Private scan booked for next Tues, all being well.

Is increased symptoms a good sign? Should I just focus on the fact that they did see the heartbeat at least once?

Oh and also, there is a fetous in the sac, she gave me a pic before then telling me she couldn't find it the second time.
