What is your baby going to sleep in?

Hello,
We are expecting our first baby in the next few weeks, and wanted to know what is best for the baby to sleep in?

Our doctor said that it's best if baby sleeps in our room for the first few months, but our bedroom is too small for the cotbed (which is in the nursery)

We looked at Moses baskets, but my sister said that they are not very good.

When I looked on the internet I have seen buggy carrycots which we will probably get as we are getting a Quinny Buzz - are these safe to use as a baby bed?

I also saw Shnuggle www.shnuggle.com which is like a car carrycot, but for use in the home. It says is better than a Moses bakset - has anyone used one of these?

We looked at the swinging cribs, which look lovely - but are quite expensive and cant move it downstairs easily!

I also found a lovely looking baby hammock www.babyhammocks.com/ which look lovely - but are they safe for a baby to sleep in long term? I'd be worried about curved backs!

HELP! As we don't know what to do....

My DD slept in a moses basket in our room until 8 weeks, then she went in a cot in her room. Will do the same with this one just as we have all the stuff anyway.

nunnie · 14/06/2010 12:38

Forgot to say my DD slept on a doomoo seat downstairs, never took the moses basked and stand out of the room.

mamasunshine · 14/06/2010 12:40

I've used a moses basket both times and will this time. I personally find them great, as they're not too big and you can move it around the house with you e.g if you want to have the baby sleeping downstairs whilst you're there in the day for the first few months.

Tootles22 · 14/06/2010 12:40

thanks nunnie. Did your baby grow out of the Moses basket? or was it just too noisy? Thinking a Moses basket is best for us - Maybe the Shnuggle one if its any good!

Tootles22 · 14/06/2010 12:42

She did yes, got a bit long for it. As for noisy, she wasn't noisy unless she wanted something, she was and still is a very quiet sleeper.

Haggisfish · 14/06/2010 13:18

we'r going to use a snugglenest in our bed for night-time, and a moses basket for around the house. We;re hoping using the snuggle nest will make the transition to cot at six months a bit easier.

Cot upstairs & carry cot downstairs.

Dd2 was so wriggly she didn't last long in a basket so I'm not bothering this time. Will have carry cot for pram if baby doesn't like the cot

redbird79 · 14/06/2010 13:24

Thanks for this thread- I am currently trying to decide what to do on this subject too. Am leaning towards getting a second-hand Moses basket and rocket stand or rocking crib, which will sit next to our bed. I move about too much in my sleep to risk having a little one in bed with us, and our room is too small to fit a big cotbed in.
My mum told me babies grow out of Moses baskets/cribs really quickly, hence why I was thinking second-hand....
By the way, Nunnie can I ask you how baby was going into her own room at 8 weeks, did she settle ok?

mamasunshine · 14/06/2010 13:27

Yes, I'll have 3 under 3 Actually even though we have had the moses basket we have co-slept mainly. I always liked having the option of being able to put LO down somewhere if dh has had a drink or if I was too tired. My ds2 had been on the 98th centile for weight and height and I think he still managed to squeeze into the moses basket till 4 months! Nice and cosy for him Then i moved him into a cot (on occasions!) when he wasn't in with us. Moved him out of our bed properly when he was 10 months old as I just wasn't getting enough sleep. Good luck, it's the most wonderful thing I may even invest in a snugglenest this time too!

silver28 · 14/06/2010 13:34

We had a rocking crib that we bought cheap at an nct sale. I wouldn't recommend it as ds hated it for some reason (and later other people told us that babies often don't take to them) and we gave up on it after a few nights. We then took the pram in our bedroom every night as he slept much better in there and it wa easy to rock it - we had a quinny with the flat pram attachment. Was a bit of a faff to carry up each night bit it worked for us.

He then went into his cotbed in next room after 6 weeks cos he and I woke each other up, and he slept much better in there, though moving them out if your room isn't recommended.

NumptyMum · 14/06/2010 13:34

Moses baskets etc you can usually pick up at a good price from an NCT nearly new sale, check to see if you have one coming up before the birth locally.

We actually used a pop-up travel cot (Samsonite one) at the end of our bed (which is futon-style on the floor) although this time round I've got a better mattress for it.

Don't forget to check out eBay - esp if items are 'pick up only' as there may be fewer bidders for them and you avoid postage. We got a great cot bed that way!

nunnie · 14/06/2010 13:34

She settle suprisingly well to be honest, think she just liked her sleep still does to be honest.

My dd was only 5lb 13oz when born, but she was long, maybe she could have got away with longer in the moses basket to be honest. But she settled in the cot so well and she looked so cute when we put her at the bottom of the cot (to stop her sliding down)

mrspear · 14/06/2010 13:38

Well my DS had a crib which we used for six months although he came home a tiny 4lb 5oz. We got it from John Lewis and it was great.

Hevster · 14/06/2010 13:43

We used a Moses basket for the first 8 weeks or so (and will do again) and then moved DD into her own room in her cot. I had thought to put the moses basket in the cot at first but DD didn't seem to notice that she was in a big cot so I didn't bother. In all honesty we all slept better apart and if I woke panicing in the night I just listened to the baby monitor to check she was ok and went back to sleep. The moses basket was £30 new incl matress from John Lewis which I thought was relatively cheap.

WowOoo · 14/06/2010 13:56

We used a moses basket which we put in the cot and anywhere he'd fall asleep in the house in those lush early days where all they do is sleep!

TBH I think we could have done without the moses and just swaddled him in his cot but I was given one. We've also bed shared a lot but I sleep better alone!

My two woke a lot and I wanted to be able to settle them immediately so as not to wake dh up.

Congratulations. Such an exciting time for you.

CardiCorgi · 14/06/2010 14:06

DH's crib has been kept in a warm dry attic by MIL and is in perfect condition, so we're going to use that (new mattress etc. of course).
I thrash around too much in my sleep to want the baby in our bed.

Cosmosis · 14/06/2010 14:16

ours will be in a Moses basket - we haven't bought it though, it was mine when i was a baby

cinnamongreyhound · 14/06/2010 14:26

DS slept in his cot in his room from day one, I know the research shows it's better for them to be in your room in the beginning but we decided against it. During the day he slept in a bouncy chair, moses baskets are expensive and bulky and don't last very long so I didn't want to have one. You will find what suits you once the baby is here anyway

sazziej · 14/06/2010 14:30

My cousin has given me a Moses basket, so we'll be using that until 'wriggler' is ready to move into her cotbed in her own room.

notso · 14/06/2010 14:40

DD slept in a Moses basket until 4 months then the cot, still in our room until 7 months.
DS slept in the pram downstairs and Moses basket upstairs until 7 months, and he was 9lb 5oz at birth so Moses baskets last longer than you think, and this one was an Argos cheapy.
This one will probably sleep in the pram downstairs and we are thinking of getting the stokke sleepi cot for upstairs which converts to a mini cot for the early days, although we have been offered a crib and a moses basket from friends.

Rinnyx · 14/06/2010 15:44

Our room is not to big also so we are going to use a crib as moses baskets dont last that long and cribs can do up to 6 months, after than baby will go in the other room in a cotbed

blinder · 14/06/2010 15:49

My bed from day one! Now 9mo.

hazeyjane · 14/06/2010 15:53

I am due dc3 in 3 weeks time, and we will be using the crib we used for dd1 and 2. It is a rocking one (dd1 hated the rocking action, so we tied a cord around it to stop it moving). It fitted next to the bed in our tiny bedroom where we lived before, and lasted for 6/7 months.

We were going to ebay it before we decided to try for number 3, and it seemed you could pick one up for £15 or so.

If the baby is asleep downstairs, we will probably use the Phil+Teds cocoon.
