What is your baby going to sleep in?

Hello,
We are expecting our first baby in the next few weeks, and wanted to know what is best for the baby to sleep in?

Our doctor said that it's best if baby sleeps in our room for the first few months, but our bedroom is too small for the cotbed (which is in the nursery)

We looked at Moses baskets, but my sister said that they are not very good.

When I looked on the internet I have seen buggy carrycots which we will probably get as we are getting a Quinny Buzz - are these safe to use as a baby bed?

I also saw Shnuggle www.shnuggle.com which is like a car carrycot, but for use in the home. It says is better than a Moses bakset - has anyone used one of these?

We looked at the swinging cribs, which look lovely - but are quite expensive and cant move it downstairs easily!

I also found a lovely looking baby hammock www.babyhammocks.com/ which look lovely - but are they safe for a baby to sleep in long term? I'd be worried about curved backs!

HELP! As we don't know what to do....

My twins went straight into their own bedroom (ours isn't very big) and shared a moses basket for about a week (they were tiddlers!) until we discovered we had a pair of sweaty betty's and we split them up and they went in their cot beds. What a heartless mother I am!!

susitwoshoes · 14/06/2010 16:01

DD (now nearly 6 months) slept in the Moses basket that my sister and I slept in as babies, it's slightly bigger than modern ones and DD was in it until she was about 12 weeks (she's quite wee), then went into a cot in our room which is massive, she'll be moving into her own room in the next couple of weeks. If you are going for a second-hand moses basket current SIDS guidelines suggest you get a new mattress - my niece was in the basket a year before DD so my mum ordered a new mattress for us.

Good luck!

No practical experience yet, but we plan (I reserve the right to change all of this!) to have the baby sleep in his/her cot in the nursery during the day and to sleep in the Moses basket in our room overnight until he/she doesn't fit in it anymore.

We were given a Moses basket by a friend but you can get really cheap ones from Mothercare, which is what we would have gone for if we hadn't been given one.

shimmerysilverglitter · 14/06/2010 16:06

I had a Moses Basket in the bedroom.

Also a travel cot in the living room as sometimes I was just so knackered I really didn't want to do the will they/wont they wake up walk of suspense to the bedroom and then I would just crash out on the sofa. I highly recommend this, did it with both dc and they are both excellent sleepers, didn't affect them not always being in the cot etc.

Like others though, alot of time spent in bed with me.

stressheaderic · 14/06/2010 16:08

I don't think Moses baskets are expensive really. Ours was £25 from Mothercare and £10 for the stand.
DD was in it in our room until 13 weeks then went straight to own cot in own bedroom with no problems.
She still has little naps in the Moses and plays with her toy arch in there as it's in our room as I can keep an eye on her when I'm on Mumsnet cleaning upstairs etc.
She's 16 weeks now and still fits in it fine.
You could prob manage without one, but they look so cute in them in those first photos....

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/06/2010 18:10

I have a moses basket, a crib and an amby nest. I expect that like the others this one will refuse to sleep anywhere except on top of me or dh or in a sling, and then end up in my bed for a few months after that .

You can't use a buggy carry cot as the mattress doesn't provide enough support.

Teapot13 · 14/06/2010 20:07

Our daughter (6 mo) sleeps in a "co-sleeper." It's a small cot at the same level as our bed, with just three sides. I have heard of people setting them up themselves with a regular cot. Ours (Arms Length) also folds into a play yard. It's practical for nighttime feeding and will probably last longer than a Moses basket. It was hard to assemble and wasn't cheap, but we bought it thinking she'll be able to sleep in it for 2 years or so, and we can move it into her room (with 4th side) when we're all ready. Real co-sleeping didn't seem safe for our family because my husband is a heavy sleeper and our bed is a small double, so it was a good solution for us. There's also something called a Bed Nest, which I kind of wish we had got instead. Same principle but ours is hard to assemble.

Vistana · 14/06/2010 21:24

I've got a hammock cot which doesn't take up much space, simliar to an Amby one.
Can also be folded down and taken on hols as the metal frame is light.
If I'd not got it so cheap off ebay, local pick up so not many bidders, I would've listened to my mum and just got a good mattress for the flat carry cot part of the pram and let baby sleep in there as thats what my mum did with me as she couldn't see the point in getting a moses basket.

MumNWLondon · 14/06/2010 22:04

We only lasted with DS2 in our room for 3.5 weeks. I think I lasted slightly longer with DD (about 6 weeks) and around the same with DS1. So our crib only got used for a total of 12 weeks. I am a lightsleeper and just could not sleep at all in a room with a sniffly baby.

In hindsight I might have tried to borrow either a crib or a moses basket. if he sleeps downstairs its in his baby chair which goes almost flat.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 14/06/2010 22:08

My son slept with me in my bed, it made breastfeeding so much easier and we all got better sleep. With baby no2 I am going to do exactly the same thing and have him/her in with us. It's the best way, it's how we've evolved to be. Bbaies need the contact, warmth and stimulation that they get from their mothers, especially during the night. There is eveidence to show that co-sleeping, when done safely and correctly actually helps reduce the risk of cot death. Statistics that show it as being dangerous are mis-leading as they include deaths that are due to co-sleepig on the sofa, and with the mother/father having drunk alcohol, taken certain meds/drugs or being ill.

porcamiseria · 15/06/2010 08:52

there is nothing wrong with a moses basket, they are great for the first couple of months

I then put baby in his own room and cot at 12 weeks, our walls are very thin!

Principle · 15/06/2010 08:58

I have gone for an along side cot, bought it back in April, have put it up to look at and put it back away it stores well in its own little bag.

JosephineClaire · 15/06/2010 09:02

I just got a Moses Basket from John Lewis, only £29. It's still in its plastic wrapper, but it looks lovely and was under half the price of one from Mamas & Papas

I've also borrowed a wooden cradle for downstairs, but if the baby hates being in it, I'll just bring the Moses Basket downstairs or use one of those little bouncy chairs that lean quite far back?

I agree with the comments about Ebay - I've picked up a Baby Bjorn sling, hardly used, for £30 and a couple of those groegg thermometers for £6 each rather than £22!

petisa · 15/06/2010 13:06

When dd was born, at the beginning she refused to go into anything with "sides" like a moses basket or carry cot, and would only settle if she could see me and would go to sleep gazing at me (awww!) so the bedside cot we got was a godsend. She's still in it now though, but I also have a bigger bed, so the plan is that dd2 will be in the bed with me until she moves into her own cot in her own room. That happened at around 6 months last time, which seemed a perfect time, so plan to do the same this time...

LooL00 · 15/06/2010 13:37

Moses basket and 2 stands, one upstairs, one down. We borrow the stands and have bought a new moses basket as the last one went mouldy.

Gherkinsmummy · 15/06/2010 16:36

Our baby is due in the middle of July; I've bought a bednest as I like the idea of co-sleeping but our bed is quite small. Its like a fancier Moses basket, with a fold down side, that straps to your bed so you and the baby are at the same height. It wasn't cheap... but they retain their resale value well, and a friend has given us a cotbed so we've saved money elsewhere.

PickleSarnie · 15/06/2010 17:30

My OH has suggested we make it sleep in a drawer filled with pillows. Then when it cries too much we can just shut the drawer.

Should I alert the authorities?!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 15/06/2010 20:37

Moses baskets are fab, and we managed to stuff DS into his until he was about 4 and a half months! So they're not that ephemeral. But most people don't use them for that long, so you can usually pick up a second-hand bargain in good condition. You'd want to buy a new mattress though (Mothercare do them). You can get a stand too, which rocks, and use them downstairs.

DS was in a Moses Basket until 4.5 months, then a small bedside crib (we only used this because it was given to us) and then went into his own room at 7 months, into a cotbed. DC2 will probably come into bed with us from the onset - I don't think I'll be able to function, looking after a toddler and breastfeeding all night, otherwise!

Nothing wrong with drawers - lots of babies slept in them. Probably better not to use a filing cabinet though.

Minshu · 15/06/2010 20:55

Another moses basket user here. We brought it downstairs in the day in the early weeks, and she would spend part of most nights in our bed.

DD outgrew it widthwise at about 13 weeks, as she likes to throw her arms out in her sleep, so started to wake herself up No problems getting her into her cot in her own room at 3 months.

mummytosquidgies · 15/06/2010 21:00

DS slept in our bed from day 1, even at the hospital (nurses encouraged it )

We bought a cot and I don't think he slept a single night in it, he went straight from our bed to his own at 2.

We've still got the cot, so we have the option for this one, but we're planning on having him in our bed like DS, it worked fantastically for us.

FortunateHamster · 15/06/2010 21:01

We bought a moses basket for our bedroom (and a cotbed for the nursery on my parents' insistence) but as we're hoping to keep him in our room until six months, we ended up getting the moses basket downstairs and have bought a crib instead. But only because it was on offer at Toys R Us for £50 with mattress (we got it couple of weeks ago, not sure if it's still in stock, haven't been back since!).

DuelingFanjo · 15/06/2010 21:04

My mum's partner is making me a crib which I plan to have in the bedroom with me then a cot when the baby is bigger. I am planning on getting and putting up a cot in the spare room if only to put the spare room out of action so MIL over eager relatives don't try to stay over

ooosabeauta · 15/06/2010 21:05

I love the look of the bednest so I'm hoping to get one for next time. My ds was another one who wouldn't sleep anywhere out of arm's reach of me, and never would settle in the moses basket so he was in the bed with me until nearly a year. It was great for bonding but I've just got used to being able to move around freely again so like the thought of a little bed extension like this!

missedith01 · 15/06/2010 21:12

We got given a moses basket and a cot-bed and are still using bith for our 11w-old son. He went in the cot-bed straight away at night and during the day sleeps in the moses basket, pram, armchair or on a chest, wherever we can persuade him to sleep!

We're lucky in that we can (just about) fit the cot-bed in our room; if you are really keen to have your baby in the room with you (which I totally understand) have you considered one of the cots than attach to the bed ... they look smaller than a cot-bed? If we hadn't been given stuff that would have been my choice ... sort of co-sleeping for cowards!

aactionmum · 15/06/2010 21:25

We have a Silver Cross classic sleepover pram with linear chasis. The pram has covers and a mattress so can be used like a Moses basket. DS started to sleep there as he didn't like the cot. He then moved into our bed after my MW suggested it as I was breastfeeding. A king size bed is one of the best things we've ever bought I'm still BF and he's almost 1 and still in our bed
