Heavy bleeding @ 13.3 weeks

On Saturday I was in the middle of giving a lesson when I thought I'd wet myself. I tried to hang on, but every now and then I would get another gush, so (very embarassed and somewhat in a panic) I went to the loo, to find blood all down my jeans, my knickers were saturated and it was even on my long top. Sitting down there was a massive gush, and I just thought "Oh my god, that's it, the baby's gone and it's all over."

Seeing how bad it was, and how distressed I was, my pupil's mum very kingly drove me straight to hospital, where I was seen and admitted to a ward. The doc gave me a (bloody painful) speculum exam, and said it looked ok - and the cervix was still in tact so there was hope. When she had a feel of my abdomen though, it was really painful on the left, and took until the morning to subside, even with paras.

By Sunday morning, the bleeding had slowed enough that it was clear when I weed, so they sent me down to the delivery ward to have a Doppler check. Not expecting them to find anything, we burst into tears when she found a heart beat.

They seemed quite happy to let me go at that point, even though I was still bleeding slightly and still have pain on the left of my abdomen. This morning there's still bright red, thick blood when I wipe, but it's not transferring to the pad.

I've only got to wait until tomorrow for a scan now, but has anyone had anything like this? This is my 4th baby, but I've never had any bleeding before, and it's just so bloody scary I don't know what to think! I did think it might be because I'm 35, or that my DS has just had chicken pox, but I've had it, and all the advice on that said not to worry about it?

Hello hobbitmama
Im sorry you are having a worrying time at the moment.

My story is this...after previously having a mmc at 11 weeks i was a nervous wreak when i found i was expecting again. Even more so when like yourself i had very heavy bleeding, first seen at 7 weeks when i had a nervous week wait until they could get a good enough picture on the scan, all was fine. More bleeding at 13 weeks, again just like yourself. This went on for a few days also accompanied by a pain in my side. Again this was ok when i had another scan.
More bleeding at 20 and 23 weeks, all very much as you describe.

My dd is now a gorgeous 16 week old

The bleeding was put down to one of those things by a few doctors but later found out i had a slight cervical erosion caused by my d&c. So every time something come into contact with the damaged tissue it would come away in form of a bleed. Maybe the same can be said for you?

I do hope everything works out ok for you x

Hello
I just thought I'd share with you - I experienced very similar thing at 11 weeks bleeding heavily and large chunks of what I now know was placenta. Went straight to doctor and she gave me an injection and bed rest for a week bleeding gradually slowed but it was awful I was so upset and would fish everything out of the toilet to check it. We had a scan that day and baby was ok and went back the following day baby was still fine but I had a hole where the clots had come from. went back the following week for the oscar testing and a different doctor said I had a significant blood clot i later found out it was 6X6cm large - bigger than the baby. Today I am 14 weeks and started to bleed again went back to the doctor and its the clot thats releasing baby seems to be fine and growing normally.
I know its a very scary and stressful time but try to stay positive I had pain where the hole was which was also on the side.

I hope everything is fine and your scan goes well tomorrow - take care x

HobbitMama · 14/06/2010 11:32

Thanks ladies - ff did your doctor say what they thought might have caused the hole? I'm a bit worried that it might be something similar, because I've had 3 caesarean's already and the last one was only 15 months ago!
Barbie - your story gives me hope! I have also had some gynae procedures before - 2 top's and a laparoscopy, which found some fibroids - so it may be linked to that.
Did the school run this morning, and will get this afternoon's done, but think I'm just going to take it a bit easy. Thankfully my DH works from home Tues-Thurs so it'll give me a good chance to rest.
fingers crossed for tomorrow, and that your pg goes well ff!

hobbitmamma... glad to be of service.

Just read about your previous c sections, i also had one and was told to wait at least 18 months before ttc to eliminate the risk of bleeding in the next pregnancy. Apparently you are more prone to bleeds. Not sure if this is true because my friends tell me that the advice in the uk is different again

Any way wishing you looks of luck tomorrow, will you come back and update...

Enjoy resting this afternoon

Hello,

No real reason given she mentioned I could have ruptured it lifting things - I had moved a suitcase the night before (not very heavy) so could possibly have been that. She also said its a warning sign that you need to slow down - I have a pretty stressful job and wonder if its not helping.
Take care and rest as much as possible it does help. Let us know how you go tomorrow wishing you all the best

hi i just wanted to add i have also had rather a lot of bleeding in the past 6 weeks. they scanned me a few days after first bleed and i have a clot surrounding the sac. they think i may continue to bleed from it but the baby is fine. just passed 20 weeks now i had scan on friday and although the clot is still there everything else is looking good.

hope everything goes well. take it easy x

HobbitMama · 14/06/2010 16:29

Thanks cheeky, every other person who's gone through something similar and posts gives me a little more hope! So thank you!

Hi I am new here although I am pregant for the 4th time! I am 5 weeks and had pain and bright red bleeding yesterday. No clots or chunks though. I have to wait til next monday to go for an early scan. A nerve wracking time, I had no trouble with any of my others and no c sections. In apr 08 I had a cone biopsy for a severely abnormal smear result. They cut away a hell of a lot of my cervix. That was 6 months after having my 3rd baby. I just wondered what other peoples experiences are of having a baby with not much cervix left. I know I will need a stitch in it at about 20 weeks. I hope everything goes ok for everyone else experiencing bleeding, you get a bit blase when you have had so many problem free pregnancies, I'm sure this one will be payback time!

randomimposter · 14/06/2010 20:53

hobbit had pretty much the same as what you describe at 14 weeks with DS. Same reaction as you (what's happening in my pants...?). REally heavy bleed (was 80 miles from home, drove home SOOOOOOOOOO fast) by the time I was home the wadge of toilet roll I had used was totally soaked, then more when I went to the loo). Went to A&E, sobbed, checked cervix (closed), scanned (baby fine). Bleeding continued for a day or so, but much less. He's now 2, snoring away upstairs.

I know how scary it all is (have had 2 MMCs since DS) but what you describe needn't be bad news. BTW I was 39 when PG with DS, so your age is irrelevant I would say... Good luck.

Hello ladies - just an update!
Scan was fine - she got the nuchal measurement fine, whic was 2.2mm (?) and the crown-rump length was 74.8mm, but she put my dates back a day, making me 13+4 today. (1 day's not going to make much difference as it'll be an ELCS on a Mon or Weds before EDD anyway!)
Bleeding has almost stopped, but am still a bit sore, but sonographer couldn't find a reason for the bleed. She asked if I'd had sex up to 48hrs before it started, and unfortunately I hadn't, so I'm thinking perhaps it might be an infection? Otherwise it could just be 'one of those things'? Anyway, it was reassuring to see that all was well with the baby - & fingers crossed it'll keep being fine!
Many thanks to you all for your kind words - it's really helped!
