Since yesterday my hands have puffed up quite abit! i woke up at about 2 am this morning as they feel like they are really heavy and hot, and i went to the bathroom and they are REALLY puffed up!! i have had alot of headaches and went to the midwife last week to get them checked out, i have never in my previous 2 pregnancy had blood pressure probs, if anything my bp is usually pretty low, i am also noticing that my hands, well the knuckles are pretty itchy as are my legs, im not sure if that had any significance! i guess since i have been lucky enough to never have any problems at all with my other 2, that these symptoms are a little bit worrying?? anyone got any ideas, or am i just a wreck? im 34 weeks by the way. xxx

It's not unusual to have swollen fingers, hands or feet during pregnancy, but if you have been having any other signs of pre-eclampsia then get it checked out.

Do you have any swelling to your face at all?

HelenEmjay · 11/08/2005 09:08

No not at the moment WWB, although i did yesterday, to the point where even my eyes looked like id been bawling my eyes out all day! but then it just went! im pretty confused to be honest! Can the swelling you get normally be so bad and come on so sudden??

Please get it checked out. If you can't get to see your midwife today, can you call the maternity ward and ask for advice?

WigWamBam · 11/08/2005 09:12

And yes - the swelling can come on very badly and very suddenly.

Hattie05 · 11/08/2005 09:15

I was very swollen during the last couple of months of my pg and the midwives were never concerned. Hands, feet and legs below knee were virtually always swollen.

WigWamBam · 11/08/2005 09:17

Swelling of the face always needs to be checked out, particularly when accompanied by the headaches and so on that Helen has had. A certain amount of odema is normal in pregnancy but to come on so quickly, and to be in the face as well, I would still suggest needs to be checked out.

I'm glad you can get seen today. Hope everything's OK - if nothing else, the worry isn't good for you!

mumfor1sttime · 11/08/2005 09:26

I agree with WWB, I had swolen ankles, swolen hands and feet and toes. Resulted in emergency c section - dont want to scare anyone, but cant hurt to get it checked out, go and see doctor if midwife not available-least they can check your BP.

HelenEmjay · 11/08/2005 09:26

Hahaha thanks wwb! had a mad row with my mum the other day so i think i could do with a break from stress at the mo! im knackered!

mumfor1sttime · 11/08/2005 09:28

I was 39 wks

desperatehousewife · 11/08/2005 09:31

My ankles ballooned when I was 6 months and my fingers swelled too but my midwife said nothing to worry about. At 37 weeks I was in hospital with pre-eclampsia. Definately worth getting checked. I didn't have any of the other symptoms like swollen face or bright lights or headaches.

WigWamBam · 11/08/2005 14:55

How did you get on, Helen?

HelenEmjay · 12/08/2005 14:33

Hiya WWB and everyone, i went and saw midwife and she checked my bp and it was fine, 100/60 which is pretty normal for me, she said that at a previous appt it had gone up quite abit to a level that although wast too bad, was quite high for me, so she will keep an extra eye out to make sure that no problems may be starting, she said the swelling was quite bad on my hands and was starting on my feet by then, but it was probably just one of those pregnancy things! cant wait until this pregnancy is over, i seem to have worried much much more with this one!

Hi Helen, have you been heavily pg in the summer before? If m/w is happy, maybe just the heat making it different to other pgs? When I had dd I worked to 2 weeks before with no swelling, but the minute I stopped and started putting my feet up in the garden my feet and hands went like balloons - don't know if it was the change in exercise levels or heat but I know how you feel. Just remember, not long to go now and tell m/w if it gets any worse.
