mid wife meeting at 12 weeks, dating scan at 13 weeks? Isn't it kind of late?

Hi I got a letter from the hospital midwife.
My first meeting with the team will take place on 14/7 which 12-1 week for me and the dating scan on my 13-3 week. What about Nuchal scan, will it be done during dating scan. Isn't dating scan takes place at about 10 weeks? I am new at this, so any advice is welcome. Should I call and ask if this should be done earlier?

Thanks

I got my first midwife meeting at about 10 weeks but had to wait til 15 weeks for my first scan as they were so busy.
Not too sure about the nuchal scan sorry.
Congratulations by the way, such an exciting time!

DomesticG0ddess · 10/06/2010 20:20

The scan usually takes place between about 11-13 weeks and booking in around 10 weeks. This can vary from place to place, but I haven't heard of dating scans being done at 10 weeks unless you have absolutely no idea when your LMP was. I had a mc in January and got pg after it without having a period and I still didn't get my scan until 11+6 weeks. If they know you are having a nuchal scan, I am sure it is fine - why not just check with them? Not every NHS team does it automatically.

Dating scans are usually at 12 weeks (or as close to this as poss). Not sure about nuchals, but not all hospitals offer them, why not ring your local hospital ultrasound dept or the midwives to ask. Neither the trust I work in or the one I am under for my antenatal care offer them, so I don't think it's that unusual.

TheNextMrsDepp · 10/06/2010 20:32

That's pretty close to when I first saw people. They don't like to do things too early as, to be frank, many pgs don't make it past the crucial 12 weeks (that wasn't meant to worry you btw).

moonstorm · 10/06/2010 20:34

nuchal scan last day is 13+6 hth

abr1de · 10/06/2010 20:35

Nothing much happened with me in either of my pregnancies until about then.

moonstorm · 10/06/2010 20:36

ps double check they are going to do the nuchal scan. I had to get mine done privately.

babynelly2010 · 10/06/2010 20:38

Thanks everyone!
Sounds like I need to call and make sure that my Nuchal scan is included with the dating scan otherwise I will miss the window for the Nuchal scan.

Does anyone know how many percent of pregnancies do not make past 12 weeks? Is there a big chance that I won't make it?

I met with my mid wife at 10wks; then I missed my dating scan and nuchal tests that were booked for 12wks due to the volcanic ash cloud. I too was a bit aprehensive as it is my first pregnancy and i am in my early 30's which a gp said could be a concern, my friends said it was rubbish but you still worry a little. I had my dating scan at 15wks and only when i had my second scan at 19wks did i have the triple blood test which test for chromosome abnormalities. I am stil waiting for my test result but feel if it was a bad result I would have known by now.I personnaly would have prefered the earlier test but circumstances were not in my favour this time. However there if you do miss the initial nuclear test there is always teh triple blood test later on. Alos remember it only gives you a one in a million or one in a thousand etc outcome it is never a yes or no answer. You only get that with the aminio test which also has the 1 in 100 chance of miscarriage. I would only opt for this as a last resort. Good luck, stay calm all will work out and even though it is frustrating to wait when you have your scan its will all feel much more real

Missus84 · 10/06/2010 20:47

Some places don't do the nuchal scan.

TheNextMrsDepp · 10/06/2010 20:49

I don't know the percentage which don't make it past 12 weeks, but I do know that after that time the likelyhood of miscarriage decreases dramatically. That's why they advise people not to tell anyone til then. But fingers crossed for you, no reason to suspect anything will go wrong.

My nuchal scans were done at the same time as the dating scan (13 weeks).

Backinthebox · 10/06/2010 21:12

Dating and nuchal scan usually done at 12 weeks - one and the same scan. There is nothing that any midwife can do before then other than make a note of the fact you are pregnant and will be seeing more of them in the future. Don't panic - everyone always does first time, but just let things take there course. Pregnancy feels like it lasts forever anyway without getting full on with appointments early on!

DuelingFanjo · 10/06/2010 22:14

babynelly2010 I didn't see my midwife until I was 12 weeks but the Nuchal scan isn't available on the NHS where I am anyway so I had already arranged a private one. Are you sure that you get the full scan and bloods on the NHS? I would check it out if you do want the Nuchal test.

TheNextMrsDepp · 10/06/2010 22:47

I had no idea that nuchal scans weren't available on the NHS nationwide! Move to Surrey!!

sassy34264 · 10/06/2010 22:57

Because i was pregnant with twins, i was told that the triple test was unsuitable as it could give me a false reading. I was told instead i could have the nuchal scan. I didn't want to have it however, but never got the chance to tell them and no-one bothered to ask me. When i mentioned at my 12 week scan that i didn't want them to do it now, i was told i would have had to book it separately anyway and it was too late now cos the babies were measuring 13+. So, i would definately ring up and make sure it is booked cos they don't always bother to ask.

SeoMum · 11/06/2010 10:50

My dating scan is at 13 weeks as they were busy but don't get a nuchal scan at my hospital so having to wait for 16 week blood test. Make sure they definately offer a nuchal scan as I wasn't offered a hospital that did it and if you miss it you will have to wait. My godmother and cousin are midwifes so I got the information off them otherwise I wouldn't know I think you have till the end of the 13th week before the Nuchal scan can be done.

babynelly2010 · 11/06/2010 11:09

they do offer nuchal scan, it is all sorted, they will be doing dating and nuchal at once.

Thanks!

You might want to check if they do a combined screen - this is a nuchal scan plus blood test at the same time plus your weight. More accurate but only offered at certain centres on the NHS. You can't do it later though, has to be at the same time.

Good luck with the scan.
