I was wondering what is actually going to be essential? Obviously a car seat, but is a pram/pramette essential or would a buggy be enough.I am looking at systems that connect so buggy/pram car seat all attaching to the same frame, but if I can afford and its best to buy separates I may do this. Just doing initial research, any suggestions? Also are mama and papa systems as good as the rest?

When I was a child my parents had a plastic canvas buggy that was broken and held together down the back by a pole of wood, it was the 70's but really it was all they needed, it went on walks along the coast line and was very sufficiant. All these choices make it seem so crucial and I'm not really convinced but spending and peer pressure will mean a will probably toe the line with a stylish system.

Is anyone else confused?

You don't have to have a travel system, you can have a car seat and a pram/pushchair. The only real upside of a travel system is that you don't have to wake the baby to get them out the car.

Mamas and Papas are good prams, but there are lots o different prams out there.
