Is this big bump the baby or just too many McDonalds?

Hi!
Went for my 20 week scan last week, she was using the scan thing really low (where I usually get period pains - much further below my belly-button) but my bump is further up, it's a big bump though and feels rather firm, now my partner thinks I have just put on loads of weight rather than it being baby whose behind the bump. Baby is good size - that they brought the date forward a week. Can anyone suggest anything??

the baby might be low still, but will be taking up quite a lot of space by 20 weeks and all the stuff that used to be down there has to go somewhere

Dude, tell your partner to faf off! As long as your midwife thinks that your weight gain is normal - your fine!
Also, remember that you have got a lot of internal organs that need to go somewhere while your baby is doing lots of growing - so it sounds like they are being pushed up a little.

Eat more McDonnalds, it's the 1 time in your life when you have a reason for being fat, added to which sounds quite normal to me, mine baby is low down and my bump is massive at 22 weeks.

Don't worry. They appear to be scanning low as they need to look 'through' the bladder, and also remember that the ultrasound reaches quite a long way, so although the probe might be low down, if it is pointing upwards then it will be scanning the area under your 'bump'. They also need to be able to get the probe as close as possible to wht they are looking at, hence, if you have,... erm,.. a little excess tummy tissue??? then they will need to get 'under' this. Isn't it right that by 20 weeks the top of your uterus reaches up to your belly button? Or somthing like this!

So, sorry for waffling, hope some of that helps?? And I agree, being able to eat guilt-free cake is the only good thing about being pregnant sometimes (apart for the getting the baby bit obviously) so enjoy!!!

my bump ay 20 weeks was quite high but baby has lay low all along, so low infact that i had a scan at 22 weeks and i had to pull my trousers almost below my bottom, he was so low what they thought was his head was actually his bottom and his head was nestled right near my pelvis so dont worry its just where they get themselves comfy

Yes, at 20 weeks your uterus is about at your belly button, but PrivetDancer is absolutely right - your internal organs are being pushed around so you will have a bump that goes much higher than your actual uteruus does.

I'm 18+4 and my baby is low down when I lie down (i.e. to get the heartbeat the scanner thing would have to be held just above my pubic area) but when I stand up the bump is higher than that. (Mine is a mixture of baby and McDonalds though.) It sounds like your partner is not bein very supportive. Can you show him one of those books where they have pics of pg women at different stages?

Wow, thanks for all of the replies! My partner is a biologist so I would have though he would have known at least some of this! The organs moving up to make space for baby makes so much sense I don't know why I didn't think of this before! My partner is a bit of a divvy sometimes but very supportive was just a bit worried about me thats all, I'll carry on enjoying lots of McDonalds and random people coming up to me to feel my bump. I think it's quite big and so do other people (who have not had kids I might add) but lots of people who have had kids think my bump is tiny! I'll add a pic to show my bump, taken yesterday on my birthday
