How much weight did you put on in pregnancy?

I am a first timer, and in total have put on about 8kg, this seems low compared to what people say they have put on. I am not ultra fit neither ultra obese, BMI has gone from 27 to 31.

Straw poll please as to how much weight you have out on . I am 38+4 btw.

3 stone both times, not sure what that is in kg but I imagine quite a lot !

Haggisfish · 09/06/2010 08:24

Yep, I started out at nine stone and have put on three stone (37+). Quite sure a lot of it is down to the vast quantities of chocolate and biscuits I have been shovelling down my neck, and the fact that I cannot exercise anywhere near as much as I could before getting pregnant. Cannot wait to be able to go for a run!

JoKettle · 09/06/2010 08:27

BMI has no relevance during pregnancy so don't use this as a guide. If your pre-pregnancy BMI was 27-30 you should aim for 7-12 kg weight gain so you are doing fine.

I am 39 weeks and have put on 15kg (2.5 stone) but had pre-preg BMI of 21 so am "allowed" 11-16kg - better stop eating cake now I suppose

tobago04 · 09/06/2010 08:35

I put on about 2st with dd1 and just over 2st with dd2,i'm 32wks with no.3 and have put on about 8.6kg so far but baby is nearly 6lbs already!

notnearlyasblondasiwas · 09/06/2010 09:01

I put on 9kg with mine, but was a bit of a fatty to start, as I have always ate for 2

Cosmosis · 09/06/2010 09:16

I've put on about a stone and a half so far (am 29 weeks). I was 8st 6ish before pg, am about 10st now. It's all baby related though, haven't changed shape from the back at all.

Tubbilicious · 09/06/2010 09:42

24 weeks with baby number 1. Weighed myself yesterday... 1.5 stone gained which is about 10kg I think.

Funkycherry · 09/06/2010 10:28

Now 34wks. BMI was 31 at booking app.
Was 12s12lb now 14s3lb. So gained 1s5lb.
Most of that has been the last 4wks since I've left work as I've been using pregnancy as an excuse to eat rubbish food!

virgo1979 · 09/06/2010 10:44

hmmm interesting, I am still at the low end then.... I have really struggled to eat during pregnancy in 1st trimester and in 3rd trimester.....have to make myself eat by thinking of baby. i could happily eat junk all day but it doesnt fill me up.....have been trying to eat a bit more the last few weeks though, have no idea what baby weight is, might ask at next check up...

Virgo - I wouldn't worry yourself. If you had BMI of 27 before pregnancy then you don't have to worry about the additional fat stores like someone would if they had a BMI of (say) 21 or lower.

Also a lot of weight gain depends on fluid retention- some people get a lot, some people very little.

I'm sure that they would have told you if they were worried about the size of the baby.

jamaisjedors · 09/06/2010 12:00

about 9kg with DS1 (thought that was about the minimum you could put on what with weight of baby, placenta, fluid etc).

I weighed the same as pre-pregnancy when I got home from hospital BUT I couldn't fit into any of my clothes for about a year

DS2, put on about 13kg (1kg of haribo on day of birth .

Could fit into clothes after about 3 mths.

jamaisjedors · 09/06/2010 12:02

Actually just re-read - I'm sure you are fine if your BMI was 27.

Mine is/was around 19-20 (outside pregnancy) and they weren't at all worried about me (regular weigh-ins every month or less with the gynae/doc).

SacharissaCripslock · 09/06/2010 12:04

I only put on 4kg with my second pregnancy. After birth I ended up lighter than before I got pregnant.

TheProvincialLady · 09/06/2010 12:07

I don't know how much I weighed by the end of my pregnancies thank God but a few weeks after having DS2 I was 1.5 stone heavier than before I was pregnant. That is quite a lot for someone who normally weighs 7 stone. It has all come off though.

Hevster · 09/06/2010 12:07

Last time i put on a whopping 4 and 1/2 stone, this time I anticipate it will be somewhat less as I am cutting out the fried breakfasts and doughnuts!

Meita · 09/06/2010 12:23

You don't need to put on much weight.
As I understand it, our bodies tend to create fat stores during pregnancy. This is probably an evolutionary advantage, because it means that even if there were food shortages after baby is born, we would have enough fat reserves to be able to breastfeed.
As it is unlikely that you will go through a period of starvation after birth, you don't really need the reserves. So don't worry if you are not gaining very much weight.

Haggisfish · 09/06/2010 12:40

However, my midwife tells me you can use 2500 calories AN HOUR in labour! So that is another reason why we do build up fat stores - you do need a lot of energy to get through it.

Cosmosis · 09/06/2010 13:02

jamaisjedors, interesting you were weighed throughout - was that recent? My bmi was just under 21 when I got pg, no one has weighed me since, I didn't think they did any more.

Meglet · 09/06/2010 13:08

With DS I started at 8st 3lb (BMI of 19ish). Ended up at 11 stone .

With DD started at 9 stone and ended up at almost 11 stone.

All weight gone now thanks to IBS & stress .

jamaisjedors · 09/06/2010 13:29

Cosmosis I am in France - it is standard here.

Not a bad thing I think, they also do monthly blood tests for toxoplasmosis and you do a diabetes test at around 6mths too.

Internals every month too

goodlifemummy · 09/06/2010 13:33

With DTD's I started at 9stone2 and put on 3 stone had them at 33+6 and within 3 days of hospital food, was down to 9 stone. This time I started at 9stone6 and have no idea what I am now (11+4) as hubby has taken bathroom scales to work for a competition but probably a good thing!

Octaviapink · 09/06/2010 14:04

I'm 20 weeks with no 2 and have put on 7lb. Last time I didn't gain much at all in the first half and gave up weighing myself after putting on 2 stone.

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/06/2010 14:07

2 stone both times. Perhaps a little more with second pg as the morning sickness wasn't quite so bad.

babylann · 09/06/2010 14:17

Don't know about kg or BMI, but I put on somewhere between 4-5 stone. Ended up having a big baby (well, I thought big - 9lbs 3oz), and also had a lot of water retention and a HUGE bump. But I did not exercise or even walk much during pregnancy due to horrible back pain, and I ate my own body weight in food pretty much every day!

LooL00 · 09/06/2010 14:21

About 10lb both times, had 8lb babies but never lost the 10lb.Must have ate a lot of cake while bf. This time I haven't been weighed.
