I am six weeks pregnant and woke up this morning to a light brown discharge. Am now in complete state and couldn't go to work! Help please.

I had this with all of my pregnancies and they were ok. I am not an expert, but i think brown is better than bright red. When I have miscarried, the blood has been bright red.

OnEdge · 07/06/2010 08:30

How much is there?

Marrow · 07/06/2010 08:37

So sorry you are experiencing this. Brown discharge and bleeding in pregnancy can be perfectly normal but it can also be a sign of something not being quite right. The only way you will know is to have a scan. Some early pregnancy units will let you self refer but others will need your GP to contact them. Depending on their policy they may scan you this week but I know that some will not scan before seven weeks.

Why don't you give your GP a call and see what he advises? I'm sorry - I know how horrible it is to be worrying like this.

Ladyopheliastar · 07/06/2010 08:40

Thank you for replying so fast. I am going out of my mind. Waiting for my surgery to open to see my doctor.

Glad they got you in quickly. Good luck - let us know how you got on.

planner26 · 07/06/2010 12:38

Good luck Ladyophelia, I had the same at 6 weeks...8 weeks...9 weeks...12 weeks...am now 15 weeks so fingers crossed over the worse. I think it is pretty common but not considered 'normal'. You should be able get a scan at your local EPU at 6 weeks - they might be able to see hearbeat. Mine were great so try get a referral there. Best wishes.

randomimposter · 07/06/2010 12:40

LadyOph - sorry you have this worry. Am sure you can barely think of anything else. As has been said it can either be evidence of something wrong, or nothing to worry about at all.

Great that you will be scanned so quickly. As you're at such an early stage I think you'll probably need an internal scan, just to get you mentally prepared. I always thought that would be horrific, but actually it was fine.

FWIW I have had a big bright red bleed at 14 weeks with DS which turned out to be nothing wrong, then no sign of anything wrong but a MMC at 13 weeks' scan and then some pinky brown discharge at 11 weeks and then another MMC confirmed at scan. I suppose I'm just trying to say it's not a guessing game, only a scan can really tell you what's what.

Good luck.

now have traces of actual blood. Thank you so much for all your messages. It has been an incredible help.

I'm really sorry you're going through this Ladyopheliastar.

I've been there myself and and it's an awful place to be in.

The very best of luck with your scan tomorrow.

suzym1984 · 07/06/2010 17:42

So sorry you having an awful time Ladyopheliastar, unfortunately I have no words of advice, just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you. Good luck tomorrow, and get some rest in the mean time

Bebo1980 · 07/06/2010 18:03

I had brown discharge (only when I went to the loo) which then turned to some blood plus some abdomen pain. I had to go back over several days to measure my hormone levels and the doctors seemed convinced that it was an early MC due to overall low results. I drove myself mad doing pregnancy tests every couple of days to make sure the line was getting darker. Turns out I was earlier on than expected and it was 'normal' bleeding, I'm now 5 months.

It's terrifying and I couldn't go to work or stop worrying for ages but try and stay positive, everything might be just fine. Thinking of you tomorrow xxx

thinking of you and hoping tomorrow is a positive one...

anonMum2 · 07/06/2010 21:02

Oh gosh, how awful! Fingers crossed for tomorrw. I had 2 MCs with rather dark thick brown spotting followed by actual bleeding hours later, but when pregnant with DS I had only light brown spotting plus slightly red ones, even then I nearly went mental. Scans showed a sac at 6 weeks then a heartbeat at 7weeks. Then he refused to come out days after his due date.

Hopefully a positive outcome for you tomorrow.

disarano · 07/06/2010 21:22

Lady be positive.

At 6 weeks I had a dark red stream of blood..and a few pains. Dr gave me a highly sensetive preg test which came back positive, then went for a scan - be prepared for an internal one. 6 weeks is very early and sometimes they cant see with a normal scan.

Anyway the abdominal scan detected a heartbeat, I had an internal scan which also detected it. They said there was a dark patch/area which they said could of been a twin that had miscarried or a hymatoma - which is a build up of blood that had collected and just drained away - apparently really, really common.

I was sent for a scan every 2 weeks to monitor in total I had them at 6 weeks, 8, 10, 12 then normal 20weeks. I also had an amino due to age and again got to see our baby - I was glad as it really put my mind at rest. Im sure everything will be ok - brown is better than red I was told.

Also if all is ok (Im sure it will be) ask for another scan in a few weeks - this is your right if you want it that is.

Please keep us informed - we understand

whomovedmychocolate · 07/06/2010 21:28

I had this at six weeks. He's nearly two now.

Good luck. Try not to worry, it's normally just old blood when it's brown.

chipmonkey · 07/06/2010 22:54

i had brown discharge all the way through my first trimester with ds3. I did have him early ( 32 weeks ) due to placenta praevia but my obs said the early bleeding was nothing to do with this. He is 5 now and a bossy little fecker an absolute joy.

Marrow · 08/06/2010 10:08

Ladyopheliastar - thinking of you this morning and hoping all goes well.

Ladyopheliastar · 08/06/2010 10:23

Thank you again. There was very little red blood at all and then gradually less brown and this morning next to nothing at all, just period like discomfort. My scan is at 12.45pm. I will let you know. Thank you again. I am so glad I found this place.
