NCT teacher says use olive oil and gently rub into area with circular motion. Put fingers in vagina and gently stretch sideways a few times. Used the analogy of mouth - when you stretch your mouth out wide by putting your fingers in the corner it hurts the first time but keep doing it gently and the muscles get used to being stretched.

That said - I can't be bothered either!

Both massaging that area and pelvic floor exercises are really, really important IMO... You should read Jamie Oliver's wife's book about pregnancy.. she was lazy when it came to pelvic floor and then wet herself while out at a social function a few months after her first was born... She sworn to never avoid doing them again... If you don't do them, you run the risk of wearing tenna lady for the rest of your days.. Sexy. NOT.

Same with massaging - talk to anyone who has torn badly, the pain is worse than the birth and sex can be very uncomfortable afterwards... Plus a good peliv floor improves sex... It'S a no brainer ladies.

Chances are, unless you've got a tiny bump or very long arms, you probably won't be able to reach. If you don't want the humiliation of your partner doing it for you (trust me, it's not remotly sexy) then dip the end of a dildo, or switched off vibrator, in olive oil and do it yourself.

hey that's a good idea cuppa. I tried for the first time the other day and felt like a beached whale flapping around trying to reach down there around the back like experts say you should. going from the front more effective..

Hi - I did the whole perineum massage thing for my first pg (poor DH) - didn't make any difference to the outcome of my labour I'm afraid! won't go into details as don't know how squeamish you are. Pelvic floor exercises are vital though!
