hcg levels at 25

Did a pg test last Sat which was negative (I was 3 days late). Did another on Wed which had a very faint positive line but I had left side discomfort just above the groin area.

Phoned the Gp and saw the same afternoon. She couldn't do a blood test as it was too late so I had one yesterday. Gp has phoned today and the hcg level is 25. I started bleeding yesterday and have been passing clots. Still have the discomfort in my left side, gp says to phone out of hours service if it gets worse over the weekend.

I didn't have any bleeding at all when I was pg with my two dc's.

Have to go for a repeat blood test on Wed, Gp thinks I am miscarrying. We also have a holiday booked for the week after next.

Dc's are almost 4 and 20 months but we didn't plan to have anymore.

Dh has been away all week working abroad so phone calls have been quite difficult although he knows what is happening. He is back tonight thank goodness. I just feel in limbo at the moment not knowing.

I can't get excited about the holiday obviously and getting quite tearful at times.

Any advice or help would be appreciated. Haven't spoken to anyone about this apart from dh.

So sorry you are going through this. I had a mc last year at 10 weeks. You are likely to get lots of support in the mc section, if you feel up to looking in there.

Being in limbo like that is awful. Why can't they take blood again on Monday? That should be soon enough to indicate whether your HCG is doubling, or falling.

Keep a really close eye on your left-sided pain. I had this and it was nothing (just the follicle that I ovulated from) but your GP is probably concerned about an ectopic so do straight to A&E if it gets bad, or if you get pain in the tip of your shoulder.

Hope your DH is back and being supportive. No other advice really other than to rest and take care of yourself over the weekend.

If you're passing clots, it doesn't sound good I'm afraid.

The Miscarriage Association have some great information leaflets I'd recommend checking out.

Basically at this stage there isn't a lot to be done and most miscarriages are natural and complete. You have to watch out for symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy (left shoulder pain, dark prune coloured blood, etc) and you should also seek medical assistance urgently if the bleeding becomes so heavy that you're soaking a thick pad in an hour, you're feeling faint or the pain gets too much to bear (although there are some strong otc painkillers available).

Having been there before myself, I'd recommend sending your OH out to get some painkillers (either solpadeine, co-codamol or dihydrocodeine with paracetamol - all available OTC at a pharmacy) if you don't have any, as well as thick sanitary pads and a pregnancy test, preferably of the same brand you used last. Then go to bed with a hot water bottle (and maybe a large glass of wine!).

Whilst the urine tests may vary anyway, you can do a comparison and see if it's getting significantly lighter.

Thank you both for your advice. So sorry you have both been in the same situation.

Dh has just arrived so it makes things a little better. I'm not sure why they can't take the blood on Monday now you come to mention it 2ndDestiny, I just assumed that you had to wait a certain length of time between tests so I didn't query it.

They have said though if I'm concerned to not hesitate to phone them before Wed.

The discomfort I'm getting is very much like ovulation pain so hopefully not an ectopic.

Thanks again.

I don't think clots sound good either and 25 is on the low side imo for being a few days late; that's not to say it will necessarily be bad news though. I hope it isn't for you. I've also been there before, 6 times, so I guess I'm very aware of everything that can go wrong. Hope you're ok.
