Is constipation causing my bleeds? (TMI)

Hi Y'all.

I've had minor bleeds, on and off since 7 weeks. Just spotting, nothing huge, but it is rather unsettling. It happened again at 9 wks then 11 and since then on and off. The thing is, it seems to happen mainly when I have a difficult bowel movement. The blood definitely comes from the cervix, and is mingled with discharge.

I feel worried by this as it seems to me to imply an instability in my pg. I had an emergency scan at 7 wks and everything seemed fine, was checked at 9 and the dr said my cervix was high and closed, and i've just had my nuchal fold scan (all clear) and there seemed to be no problems there. No one seems to have any answers. So I'm 13wks and should now be able to feel more settled and easy in my mind, but these bleeds are keeping me from relaxing.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Same with me. I am 7 weeks by LMP - may be less according to inconclusive early scans tho.

Not sure why this is and don't have any real idea as to the viability of the pregnancy yet other than my bloods showing good increase in hCG. However it doesn't help that going for a poo seems to make me bleed which makes me paranoid that everything is going wrong

Consistency of blood is the same as yours - intermingled with discharge. Only on wiping (TMI).

Just thought I'd comment to tell you I am experiencing the same thing, even though I have no idea as to the cause.

Just wanted to say that I'm now 36 weeks pregnant and have been having this (blood from the cervix with a bowel motion) from around 23 weeks but only until 32 weeks. It has stopped now for some reason! But I'm getting bleeding at other times now just to add to the fun. Been checked and checked and checked and I'm all fine. So there is something going on but they're not sure what. Talking to people I don't think it is as uncommon as it first appears to be. Keep pushing to get it checked though as you might have more success than me in finding out what's causing it. Good luck.

Had the same problem. I had a cervical erosion (not a problem, one of those things) and the pressure of the bowel movement irritated the erosion and made it bleed.

I also have a cervical erosion which caused lots of spotting (and much panicking) very early in this pregnancy. It can cause spontaneous spotting, or it can cause spotting after a bowel movement, or after sex / a pap smear / anything that touches / irritates the surface of the cervix. Or sometimes no spotting at all for ages. Quite common, especially in pregnancy but totally harmless. If you've had a good 12 wk scan and all is well with the baby, it's very likely that your spotting episodes are caused by something superficial like this, and all will be fine. Really hope it settles down so that you can start to relax.

Well that's quite interesting for my own information about the cervical erosion. They haven't really looked at my cervix in a while - I'm guessing they don't want to interfere with it now I'm getting close to the end - but it may possibly be what I have had all along. Puts my mind at rest a little bit too. Thanks.

It's such a relief to hear that it's not just me!

When I told my (horrible and scarey) MW I thought it was linked to my bowel movements she sort of scoffed at me. I'm in the process of trying to get re-assigned to another MW but in the meantime don't know who to phone about this stuff- it's a great help to be able to talk to others on here. Will keep you updated! Thank you so much.

Could be a trigger for something. I have an erosion that has caused much grief in the past 25 weeks. I have been checked lots of tmes and there is never any other cause.

I find bowel movements or simply doing too much can be a trigger.
Good luck

Similar thing is happening to me, glad I'm not going mad! I'm 8 weeks and only found out a week ago. I've been having very light brown spotting for about 10 days (why I tested) which seems to get worse when I poo then almost goes away again. Having lots of problems with trapped wind too (at least I think that's what it is) which is completely terrifying, especially coupled with the spotting. Really hoping everything is OK.
My midwife scoffed at the idea the two were linked too pleasantlyoutofdepth, but they do seem to be, first time I had spoken to her, not impressed

MustHaveaVeryShortMemory · 05/06/2010 22:07

I had the same with both pregnancies and both were fine in the end. It was the midwife at the EPU who suggested the link and said it is just because the cervix is very vascular during pregnancy - not indicative of a problem/instability at all. Sounds like your midwife needs to get up to date. Try not to worry. Have you tried lots of orange juice/dried apricots to ease constipation?

pleasantlyoutofdepth · 13/06/2010 19:54

Apricots act like a huge cork, unfortunately in my case! Prune juice, tho hardcore seems to've helped. I had another emergency scan and they couldn't see any reason for the bleeds. The bleeding seems to've let up now... Fingers crossed it stays that way.

I've also asked to change midwife. All a bit intimidating, but not as intimidating as she is...

Too nervous about bleeding to attempt nookie with my poor frustrated husband... Do you guys think it should be avoided considering. I'm in a brand new pickle about that.

Have bad trapped wind too, btw Chalky3, horrible, painful and considering the bleeds feels dangerous too... S'funny that something which makes such a ridiculous sound can be so scarey! Haven't cracked that one at all... I have to stay away from dairy and eat smaller portions and chew my food really well and that seems to minimise the agony.

Hey all, I just got admitted (am 24 weeks and 5) for a bit of brown spotting, and when the consultant touched my cervix with the speculum, it gushed...terrifying! But apparently perfectly normal. They kept me in last night for obs, but is all fine, he said can be caused by the pill, by pregnancy, is not likely to affect the baby or the pregnancy, and is just something that some women get with or without pregnancy. Still bloody scary and whatever the midwife says, it does get worse when you 'push' for a bowel movement.

I always used to bleed when I had a smear test, this is the same thing apparently. Just worth keeping an eye on they said at the hosp.

angelihelen · 13/07/2010 14:37

Anyway, all fine now and I have just got home! (smile)

lingolady · 17/09/2012 19:43

I'm reckoned to be 8 weeks (no scan as yet, so not sure), but get bleeding, actual gunky but red blood, a bit like a period, after a dump after lots of constipation. I reckon the constipation must be pressing against the cervical wall and irritating it. Even a while after toileting, blood spotting and dribs and drabs of brown discharge can come out over a period of hours. I went to the EPU today and the nurse said that most of the 30 women in there in just this morning were having the same problem - unexplained bleeding, so its very common. I have to go back tomorrow first thing for a scan....it was just impossible to scan 30 women in one morning. Apparently three-quarters of all women with this go on to have successful pregnancies.

Hi , I am experiencing PV bleeding while moving my bowel. Some times blood stain or brown discharge . Some days there’s nothing . Today I have some clotted blood like period , I am constipated for last 3 days . I am 9 week now . Really concerned , it’s IVF and I’m on progesterone . Does anyone have any similar symptoms?
