Old wives tales/myths - there are so many

Since i got pregnant - i have heard so many of these. It seems like everyone i speak to has their own to tell me.

so far i have been told...

your bump is at the front - that means its a boy

Alot of sickness means you are having a girl

If you get alot of heart burn the baby will have loads of hair (wtf?)

My dear granny still swears by guinness to help my iron.

also heard that 'smoking is ok as long as you have less than 7 a day' Trust me i didnt believe this one and knocked the ciggies on the head at the start of pregnancy.

has anyone got any others they would like to share?

so far im expecting a boy or a girl which will have a normal amount of hair....

haha! know what you mean.

I carried my dd all out front and mil was obsessed with the fact I was having a boy. She was incredibly put out when dd appeared! Once again I'm all out front and she's on about having a boy, until I pointed out how wrong she was last time

Anyway, the other one I've been told is "your skin is fabulous, you must be having a boy". I said um why? and the answer is that girls "steal" your looks. Nothing to do with the fact that this time I'm not working in a stuffy and filthy office then?

So I'm having a boy with lots of hair. I will let you know in about 5 weeks!

I was always told sickness = boy! (Correct for first time, don't know yet what this one is.)

There was a thread recently about baby's heartbeat - over 140 = girl IIRC.

I carried all up front with my girl just look like i had a football stuck on, with my son i got all around my bum and hips.

Didnt have sickness with either, and i was also told about hair and skin being rubbish if its a girl, mine was the best it had ever been with both babies.

I also heard about the intergestion and hair i had it with my first bad, and he did had loads of hair i didnt have it with my daughter but she also had loads of hair :-)

I heard that if you crave salty and bread etc a boy? and sweet things for a girl? i cant remeber now what i had.

girls carry longer as they need time to make themselves pretty. true in my case, ds 10 before dur date, dd 1 week after (just as well, they had the same due date)

don't lift your arms above your head or the umbilical cord will wrap around the baby's neck. For 9 months!!!

Several people have told me that no morning sickness + increased appetite (my symptoms) = boy.

Someone has even taken the time to create a boy or girl quiz so you can test yourself on the old wives' tales - we are keeping a record of its accuracy on the November thread!

ok well that says I'm having a boy too, although I had to randomly pick some answers since my pillow faces east and I'm just craving EVERYTHING rather than salty or sweet.

Would have been much easier to find out at the 20 wk scan

Yeah the pillow one is a bit of a random selection one, and I wasn't sure I was accurate about wee colour either!

OOOOH the test says I am having a GIRL! I hope it's right!

Have 20 week scan tomorrow so hopefully will find out then!

when my mum was pregnant with me her mil was convinced she was having a boy. So convinced in fact that when my auntie rang to tell her that my mum had had a girl she rang the hospital and said "my daughter rang earlier about my daughter in law, and I think there's been a mistake."

I'd really quite like to have boy but having another girl would really piss off the mil!

And surely the wee colour depends on what you're eating and drinking, plus I'm taking pregnacare and that makes your wee quite bright too!

Hmm, I didn't know re the wee qu either - I just put "dull" since I haven't noticed it being particularly bright!

I'm with storminabuttercup. I've never looked so bad ever! My DP says i look 'bogging'. Charming. So that would suggest a girl.

I'm also carrying up front, so much so that my brother says i must have my own gravatational pull, ie, i'm a round planet! (What a nice family i have.) So this would suggest a boy.

I couldn't eat anything sweet at all, for the first 14 weeks, not even juice. Again suggests a boy.

The hairs on my legs are hardly growing at all. Suggests a girl.

My urine is bright yellow. Suggests a boy. (having had two water infections is probably more of the reason)

It is twins though, so maybe i'm having one of each!!!!!!

the heartrate one is true. boys tend to have quicker heartrates.

sorry, should add, my mum is a midwife and used to do ultrasounds so thats how i know.

Very fun quiz! I had to guess the odd one, but it says boy, whereas the two scans I've had this week say girl!

my nan said eat the fat off meat,it will oil your insides for an easy birth !!! how can fat going into your stomach make your delivery bits more slippery !!!!

well she did have 14 children,but i dont know if they slipped out easily..

The test says I'm having a girl, 20 week scan said boy and looked pretty conclusive to me!!

I had sickness with both pregnancies and both boys (well, assuming scan is correct as I'm only 26 weeks).

Had no leg hair last time, normal this time.

Great hair last time, really greasy as soon as I've washed it this time!

Had bad heartburn both times, first DS very hairy and yet to find out with second.

DS had heartbeat of 130 almost all the time, was told this one is very fast but not given figures.

Had same weird shaped very high bump with both so far and put on hardly any weight so not sure what that means.

Couldn't bear sweet things either time so that's true for me. Don't know anymore to add but had very different pregnancies so far and both boys as far as we know!

no sickness with first pregnancy, was fat all round and def looked ugly!! it was a girl. This time round literally just have a bump out front, was sick as a dog for 4 months and my skin has never looked better. It's a boy! Guess I fit in with all old wives tales then!!
