When people assume I am a first time mum when I am not. I can tell, they give me a 'look' or if they have kids with them they say 'oh you'll have all this to come soon' and I just think 'no, I have all that already'.

I don't know why it bothers me, it is so irrational, but I just feel so patronised, generally by people who I don't know, or not very well (anyone who knows me know I already have a daughter).

It's irrational, but it pisses me off. There, I've said it

Perhaps it is because you look so young and youthful or because you are managing parenthood without the stressed look like they have.

:-)

I know it is irrational but i feel exactly the same. Cant stand the way people say things like that to me. I had it the other day in mothercare and i was with my DD and my friend and they just automatically assumed that my DD wasnt mine!!!! ARGHHH...but i have to remind myself these people are probably just trying to be nice and im just hormonal lol
xx

LOL MrsGangly, if only it were true! In fact I know it isn't as I just went to the doctor for some pain killers and within 30 seconds she had offered to sign me off for a week! I must look shattered!

Ooh yes this annoys me too! I want to wear a sign whenever I am out without DS! Have realised though that I totally make this assumption about other women which I must stop.

Hevster · 27/05/2010 11:48

Yeah, annoys me too. Was in mothercare the other day and the shop assistant kept trying to help me, she wouldn't take no for an answer and kept whittering away in my ear about how hard it was having a newborn and going shopping and how I should make the most of the free time I have now etc. Ended up giving her my best Paddington stare and not buying anything!

catbus · 27/05/2010 12:16

Oh, take it as a compliment!! I am number 4 and when without the rest of my tribe, people assume I am a first timer; so I look at it hopefully, like I can't look that craggy then!
You can then look all smug when they ask 'Awww, is this your first' and launch into a dull tirade of how hard it is, whilst I smile sweetly. Then say 'No, actually, this is my fourth', which really does shut em up!
Having said that, this pleasure happens rarely, as I HE my kids, so most often have them with me..

Can I add my own irrational annoyances?

The following comments are all meant well, I'm sure but they are really getting on my nerves now...

"It's not twins again, is it??" - No, but would it be the end of the world if it was?

"Ooh you're going to have you're hands full!" - I have big hands...

"Wow, you have really grown since I saw you last week/month..." - Umm, isn't that what I'm supposed to do?

"Ooh you carry big, don't you? You're going to be huge by term!" Huh?

Feels better to have that off my chest...

Ta!
