Ok or not? I can't remember as I didn't dye it for my first pregnancy but am considerably greyer and don't want to end up with six inches of grey roots come December...

Well I do, but lots of people don't.

As far as I can gather there's no evidence or even anything specific that is suggested could be caused by doing it, it's just a very vague 'chemicals might be absorbed into you and they could get to the baby' idea.
Highlights are thought to be better as they don't even touch the scalp so could you make do with half grey roots if you are worried?

I've been told its fine, just make sure you have good ventilation also if your doing it at home maybe get a friend to do it for you.

I am getting my roots done next week by my friend, they need it as its been 3 months haha, he will be in for a shock tho, coming to do my hair then seeing a bump, DP has not told him yet

Found this also x

Thanks folks, that's really helpful. . I will prob wait until 12 weeks then - that'll be bad enough root wise!

I have been doing mine since preggers, 35 wks now, and just had it done again!
My sis is a hairdresser, and she has to know for work?

Hevster · 19/05/2010 19:52

I did mine last preg but waited till 12 weeks and tried to stay in well ventilated areas while the dye was on

sunshine2010 · 20/05/2010 09:56

I did it all the time when I was pregnant and my mum did it when she was pregnant with me and my brother. Everyone I know dyes their hair whilst pregnant and it hasnt affected any of their children. I dont think it is a problem.

sazziej · 20/05/2010 10:39

My midwife told me it was fine.... I waited until after 12 weeks though.

I informed my hairdresser and she said it wasn't a problem, they just try not to get the dye too close to the scalp and leave it on for slightly less time.

common sense precautions if you want to dye when pregnant - don't use in the first trimester (fetus is smaller and at greater risk from possible toxins)

Buy the brand with the shortest application time, ventilate the bathroom while you're doing it, leave longer between touch ups so theres less exposure. Maybe just touch up roots if you're not too "gray".

For those of us who want to avoid chemical dyes but have lots of have gray (and don't want to look like baby's granny while in hospital), there is Henna (must be natural pure Henna or what's the point!) Lush sell it in 3 colours (very, very red, red and brown. I think there may be a black one too). Washes out in about 2 weeks, so it's fun to experiment with the colours (I use half brown, half red and that gives a lovely rich chestnuty brown/red), and it covers almost all grey.

Use a cheese grater to up a square or 2, hot water to make a sloppy (not runny) paste, apply to dry hair, tie an old Tesco bag over it and watch telly for an hour or so then shower off. Tricky the first couple of times, but then so is the chemical the chemical stuff. Don't get the paste on pale colored towels, clothes or skin! Wash off skin within 15 mins or it may stain you!
