I just got my BFP, so is very early days, and am thrilled. I am just planning ahead to a few weekends time when I will be going on a weekend away with work friends. We went last year and it involves staying in a country mansion, a fair amount of drinking, a hot tub and a horse-riding trip!! I think I can get out of the horseriding OK because I HATED it last year - was terrified, but the drinking and hot tub will prove more problematic. I'm also wondering if I should tell my boss before we go, because she will be there and I wouldn't want for it to come out then without her knowing first. Will only be about 7-8 weeks though. Any advice??

claim cystitus

If you don't really mind missing the weekend I'd be 'sick' the day before...

moulesfrites · 19/05/2010 19:16

I do still want to go though - if I drop out the price for everyone else will go up, and the more I think about it the drinking may be less of an issue, but I think the hot tub will be the real give away because I was in it all the time last year. Could just "forget" my swimming costume!

Say you have impetigo on an unmentionable area - nobody will want you anywhere near a hot tub.

And have soda water and say it's gin and tonic.

Congratulations.

Try saying your on antibiotics, plenty of antibiotics require you not to drink, also give you an excuse to get out of things, like your feeling dodgy or something

PixieCake · 19/05/2010 20:26

Say you have a verruca? Or athlete's foot? Then they won't want you in the tub with them.
Good plan to forget your cossie, but what if someone produces a (ghastly) spare?

moulesfrites · 19/05/2010 20:29

Yes, hadn't thought of athlete's foot etc!! Not sure it's something I want to admit to but needs must. Thanks for the advice!! I think I am going to confide in a close friend and if necessary do the drinks swopping trick. Still wondering about whether to tell boss or not though!

To be honest moulesfrites it might be easier to tell the boss, it's really hard to not say anything when someone asks if you are hiding something... which I am sure they will. I told my boss when I was 4 weeks as I have a good relationship and work in a small office, plus the Morning sickness was goingt to give it away quite quickly! Plus people will clock the whole not drinking tea and coffee thing. I am now 19 + 4 and haven't regretted my decision to tell them!

How about saying you've got an infected toenail and are on antibiotics for it, so no swimming or drinking?

Kity · 20/05/2010 09:35

its a tricky one coz any suggestions will send alarm bells ringing with anyone who's either had children or are just very nosey!
A good friend of ours threw a huge party last year but wasn't drinking coz she was claimed she was on antibiotics, the minute she claimed this lots of raised eyebrows and by the end of the evening the "pregnancy" rumour mill went into overdrive and it turned out that yes she was 8weeks preggers.
I know that its super early days but I would tell the boss, then at least you've got someone on side who can help smooth over any excuses you make if people get suspicious.
With regards to hotub could it be easier to say you've got a heavy period?? I know thats a bit eww but its more believable I think than antibiotics??
Drink swapping good thinking though!!
Have fun!

It would be easier to tell your boss - is impossible to hide it with all those non-pg friendly activities you'll have to bow out of. I went on a hiking weekend in the alps with work when 8 wks pregnant - got v tired v easily (which by itself wasnt a give away, normally v fit though so surprised me and everyone else), wasnt drinking, refused to get in the hot tub and also refused to eat the raw meat concoctions and stinky french cheeses served up at dinner - everyone in my whole department knew by the end of the first day!

LoveBeing33 · 20/05/2010 09:40

Depends if you can trust your boss, turned out I couldn't!

babybunting2010 · 20/05/2010 09:44

Yeah I agree LoveBeing some bosses are amazing others are words that I don't wish to use in polite society!!! My Manager is one of those words, but my MD is lovely (Like I say small company of 22, but everyone knew within about 5 minutes of me telling them!)

I went on a girls spa weekend in the early days of my first pregnancy. I said I hadn't been feeling well lately and had been getting headaches and heart palpitations but not sure what it was. I said the doctor advised that I refrain from booze and the spa facilities. I completely got away with it and also had lots of fussing making sure I got plenty of rest. I confided in one friend who helped with my cover-up story as I knew they'd talk about me when I wasn't there!

Hope you manage to enjoy the weekend and keep your secret!

LoveBeing33 · 20/05/2010 09:47

Also just thought, are you sharing a room?

IMoveTheStars · 20/05/2010 09:58

just say you don't want to get in the hot tub - plenty of people don't want to strip down to their swimsuit in front of lots of people.

as for the not drinking - just keep putting down your full glass and picking up empty ones. After a few people really won't notice.

Pootles2010 · 20/05/2010 11:53

I always just said i had upset stomach - no one wants to know anymore, and it gets you out of drinking, excuses tiredness/early nights, and also any foods you can't eat/can't face due to nausea.
