Hi

Am about 5 weeks pg & have had a small amount of bleeding for the past couple of days, pretty negligable really but is it best that sex is avoided?

Have you had an EPAU referral to get checked out?

The standard advice is that sex should be avoided in the 1st trimester if you've had bleeding I think (it's usually worded as sex is okay unless you have had bleeding, etc, etc)

probably avoid sex. EPAC would probably see you to check all is ok - usually you can self-refer, ask hospital switchboard for the early pregnancy unit - or see your GP for a referal.

The bleeding may (or may not) indicate a problem with your pregnancy, don't panic, many have bleeding and go on to have a normal pregnancy, but in my experience, it is often the first warning that things may not be going so well - even at this stage, 5 weeks, a scan will give an indication of what's happening, and you would usually be given a follow up scan a couple of weeks later to check things have progressed.

Sorry don't mean to scare you, and I hope everything is OK with you, but best to get checked.

thanks, well i phoned the midwife on mon who said that i should just see how it goes & if i managed to get an early scan (another midwife had sent off for one as i am not 100% sure of dates) then i would be lucky as there are very few appointments, very helpful

not sure if there is an epu here (cornwall) but will check it out.

Amazing how things vary - here (scotland, smallish city), EPAC is self refer and they scan everyone - though you might have to wait a couple of hours - hope you manage to get an appointment, and some answers soon.

Hi, I had 2 bleeds in the 1st trimester (at 7 weeks and 9 weeks) with my DD and was advised not to have sex until 16 weeks. Hope this helps.

thanks chocolatechomper (like the name btw & oldmum42. I phoned the mw again yesterday & was told I'd have to wait for my scan in 2 weeks & there was nothing to be done in the meantime. They don't scan til 6 weeks apparently. Sooo it's a waiting game for me....
