Hi, I am 5 weeks pregnant but because i have had two miscarriages i was worried when i started cramping last week. i went to the hospital and they arranged and early pregnancy scan. the scan showed a gestational sac and yolk sac that were the right sizes but no baby. they checked my levels and said they were normal. Now my symptoms have stopped and i am not going to the toilet as often. i'm worried it is another miscarriage....has anyone been through the same thing??

You must feel very anxious, sorry about your m/cs in the past. At 5 weeks, a yolk sac and gestational sac is exactly what you'd expect to see, so that's good news especially with normal hormone levels. With a progressing pregnancy, you'd expect to see a little blob and a heartbeat, but not until around seven weeks. Cramping is really common in early weeks of pregnancy, in the absence of any bleeding you're quite likely to be fine.
Do you have to wait until 12 weeks for a scan, or might your GP refer you for an earlier one at 7-8 weeks, given your history of m/c?

I posted a very similar message when I had an early scan at 5 weeks and 4 days there was a gestational sac and yolk sac but no heartbeat, I spent a week worrying but then a week later saw the heartbeat - it is quite common to not see a heartbeat till you are a bit further along and if you are only 5 weeks pregnant this week then last week you would have been very very early for a scan. Try not to worry - have they booked you in for another scan in a week or two?

yes me....and im sat holding my 12 week old dd!

I have previously had a mmc so understand what you must be feeling. My scan at 6 weeks showed sac but nothing else, by 8 weeks though we saw heart beat and everything.

My symptoms also went a few times but came back a week or so later....

i hope it works out for you

Thanks for the replies, yes they had booked me for a rescan in two weeks and i was feeling better. However, after my symptoms fading yesterday and waking up this morning not feeling pregnant any more i started to worry.

karice, i have been through 3 miscarriages before my DD, and what you are describing seems "normal" to me. Earliest heartbeat is usually detected is around 6.2 to 6.4 days (could even be later) but not usually earlier. Symptoms do come and go, i used to have very sore breasts, then next morning nothing, it does come and go as your body gets used to the increased progesterone, but you will not always "feel" pregnant, so that is normal as well.
What you could do if you feel too anxious to wait 2 weeks, is ask if they could do another blood test 48 hours after your last one - or even pay for this - if your hcg levels are increasing and near to doubling every 48 hours then that is usually a good sign that the pregnancy is progressing ....
good luck to you - for the moment i would be cautiously optimistic

Hi Karice,

I thought I'd just echo the others - I had a mmc before this pregnancy, so this time I had a scan at 5 weeks and at 7 weeks. At 5 weeks my scan was exactly the same as yours - yolk sac and gestational sac measuring ok for dates, nothing else. At 7 weeks they saw the heartbeat and the embryo was measuring correctly. I'm now 10 weeks.

I had cramping too, and my symptoms come and go (today they have gone!). I don't think my symptoms were that consistent until 7 weeks. Symptoms varying is pretty normal by all accounts.

So congratulations!! I really hope this works out for you, I know the next two weeks til the next scan are a long wait.
