Bleeding or Discharge? TMI - sorry

Pippaandpolly · 14/05/2010 11:22

I was due my Period last Friday and I thought I got it - but it was a very light bleed, which was unusual for me. On Monday I did a test and I'm pregnant So I assumed it was an implantation bleed. However, I'm getting more and more worried as it's a week on and I'm still bleeding, albeit a tiny bit. To be honest, I can't really tell if it's blood or light brown mucus (sorry )- but why would discharge be brown anyway? It's not red and heavy like my periods normally are, but can it be normal to have this for a whole week at this stage? According to the doctor's dates I'm only 5 weeks pregnant today. Any help/reassurance would be gratefully received .

Hi Pippaandpolly. COngratulations! Light bleeding can be normal. The brown discharge could be old blood from implantation so try not to worry. If you are concerned though, get in touch with your gp. Local surestart centres do midwife drop in sessions too xxx

Pippaandpolly · 14/05/2010 17:07

Thank you TOK, that makes me feel better - I didn't realise the implantation bleed could go on for this long. I'm so glad Mumsnet exists - I don't want to call my GP every time I get freaked out about something but at the same time, I don't want to spend the next 9 months panicking! (I am a little neurotic )

Hi Pippa, im kind of going through the same thing (i think) my af arrined 6 days late and has been spotting brown ( totally not like my period) im actually due on tommrow!!

Today its slightly pink and a little more, havent tested yet cause i just assume it's af .. but i have so many preg symptoms.

TOK · 15/05/2010 07:37

Pippaandpolly please please please don't worry about contacting your gp/midwife throughout your pregnancy. Is this your first pg? Everyone is like that when pregnant and the doctors/midwives will not mind at all. Do whatever gives you piece of mind, then you will have no regrets and be less stressed throughout your pregnancy! Being pregnant is such a wonderful experience, enjoy it!
Oh, and good luck xkatyx

Pippaandpolly · 15/05/2010 08:44

Hi xkatyx - good luck! The bleeding you've got does sound like mine so it could well be implantation bleeding.

Thanks for the advice TOK - I ended up ringing NHS direct yesterday as I was embarrassed to ring my GP . The nurse I spoke to was incredibly lovely and reassuring - though next time I will just ring my GP or midwife!

On a slightly different note, I was so impressed with NHS direct yesterday. The NHS might have its problems but thank goodness for staff as kind and thoughtful as that nurse.

I had a big, sudden and very red bleed today It was very scary. Amazing how excited you can be about something that's only been in your world for a week, and then how terrified you can be when it might have gone. The lovely out-of-hours GP has made me an appointment for an early scan on Friday, so here's praying for a heartbeat folks.

oh pippa good luck to you, xxxxx

DomesticG0ddess · 17/05/2010 10:19

Good luck, but remember you might not see a heartbeat that early, so don't worry if it is not there. I think they can see sac and fetal pole?

Pippaandpolly · 17/05/2010 15:36

Thanks both - I'm trying to prepare myself for their being no heartbeat, and hoping that I'll be able to spend another week with my heart in my mouth if I need to go back for another one.

Has your GP offered to take your bloods and do a repeat test 48 hours later (to see if HCG levels are rising sufficiently)?

Pippaandpolly · 17/05/2010 21:20

OK, I feel like a total idiot but I didn't know that was a possibility. Because it all happened yesterday (Sunday) I phoned the out-of-hours GP who booked me in for the scan - she didn't mention a blood test. I am going to phone my GP first thing in the morning. Thank you Domestic Goddess!

There is no way you would have known that unless it had happened before! Hope it all works out.

momma19 · 18/05/2010 03:00

hi all, i'm new here my name is sarah and im 19 years old. me and my partner just found out i am pregnant not so long ago. i had cramping and a few abdominal pains (almost the feeling as though your'e about to start your period) so i went to see the doctor at the out of hours who performed a test and it was negative, he prescribed some anti spasm meds and co-codamol. i did a home pregnancy test on the friday and it was positive! i did another to be sure on the monday and the same- positive. i am around 5-6 weeks but have been having some problems lately. yesterday i noticed a bleed (bright red and occasionaly brown and occasionally some stringy looking clotting) could there be something wrong? a misscarriage? i had my scan today and they performed a internal scan as they couldnt detect the baby or contents on their machines, the woman who did it did see a yolk sack on the scan and said it seems normal, they have put my cramps and abdominal pains down to implantation bleeding but how can they be so sure? i was told that it could be a sign of a misscarriage but not this early on in pregnancy, what do you think girls? please reply. thanks x

Pippaandpolly · 18/05/2010 12:19

Hi momma19, I only have my own experience to go on but that does sound pretty much like what's happening to me. I went to my GP today and he said to be emotionally prepared for them to do a d&c after my scan on Friday. He said that because I don't 'feel' pregnant anymore, it's probably the case. I would go to your GP if you continue to bleed - my bleeding has slowly gained pace over the last few days. I really hope everything's ok for you.

im just confused cause the yolk sack was seen on the scan, if the doctor who seen to me yesterday thought there was a problem surely she would have said something but she didnt, the only thing i did notice is that the other doctor i saw wanted me to do a urine sample and to bring it in on the day of my scan which i did that, but the doctor hasnt mentioned anything about it or said what it will be tested for :S

Pippaandpolly · 18/05/2010 14:45

I'm sure they would have told you if there was anything to worry about. Fingers and toes crossed for you.

I am really sorry to hear that. I had a mc in January and I knew before I started bleeding because I didn't feel pg anymore. I had only had a tiny amount of spotting, and a few days later I started bleeding more heavily. A scan confirmed there was nothing there. However, I did not need a D&C - 10 days later they scanned me again and everything had gone, which I was grateful for. If you are already bleeding more heavily I don't know why they would offer a D&C before waiting if your body sorts it out by itself.

However, to both of you, people do have heavy bleeds and go on to have healthy pregnancies, even my doctor was being positive until I went for the scan.

momma19 · 19/05/2010 02:13

hi again all something strange happened last night when i went to the toilet... when i had an internal scan as they couldnt see much with the external scan they used a gel on this rod looking thing that they stick up your vagina to scan... well last night when i passed some urine i passed what looked like a gel lump rounded and when i sqeezed it it popped and had water in it... i assume it could be the gel that was used on the rod thing??? or maybe i passed the fetus tissue have i misscarried? how will i know?

racheltann · 19/05/2010 09:51

hi all,i had a miscarriage with my 3rd pregnancy, the baby only survived to about 5-6 weeks and i was spotting constantly from about 7 weeks,i had a d&c in the end,7 months later i fell pregnant with my gorgeous boy now 6 months old and im now 11 weeks and 5 days pregnant again,i have experienced brown blood spotting for the last 2 days but no pain, any advice anyone?

Pippaandpolly · 19/05/2010 09:54

Hi Momma19, I'm sorry, I really don't know. If there was no blood it doesn't sound like a miscarriage but I'm no expert. As well as this pregnancy section here's a miscarriage section of the forum which I've found really helpful - maybe try there?

DomesticG0ddess · 19/05/2010 10:01

Momma19, I really don't know either, I know people do pass the sac, but although I did pass just one clot that was about the size of a grape, it was just a mass of red and I didn't examine it, so I have no idea. Other than that I just had period-type bleeding. But if there was no blood, I agree it doesn't sound like anything to do with the baby. I think you should speak to your GP again about getting bloods done, or you could buy a few tests and see if the lines are now lighter, or even BFN. I tested BFN a week after the bleeding started.

racheltann, from what I know, brown spotting CAN be signs of an impending mc, but can also be completely normal, so although you will be thinking the worse, it could be completely fine. When is your 12 week scan? Perhaps they could move it for you to make it ASAP? I have had on and off bloody discharge for the last couple of weeks, but the doctors aren't worried - am 18 weeks tomorrow, so it can happen at any time.
