Low PAPP-A ... unsure about a CVS

Hi Mums (and Dads)
Just got back from hospital for 12 week Nuchal Scan, and baby did a great job showing off on screen, but unfortunately his silly mummy couldn't match his good work and I failed the blood test. My Downs risk 1 in 165 and my risk of the real nasty chromosomal disorders is 1 in 10. So I feel like I should have CVS and booked one for Monday. I think if the baby had one of these terrible disorders surely the scan would show? I am feeling very unsure about the CVS, anyone had one recently?
My first baby also showed low PAPP-A and aced the scan, but I was younger then, the risk came back as 1 in 300 for Downs and 1 in 27 for t'other.
Feeling a bit ...... blue ..... but I guess happy to see a heartbeat twinkling away on the screen.

Hi Londonista - So sorry you are having to go through such a worrying time. I had a CVS in my last pregnancy when bloods and scan showed problems (way too much fluid all around the baby). The CVS itself was fine and didn't really hurt at all during or afterwards so try not to worry about that.

Sadly it was bad news for me, my baby was diagnosed with a terminal condition but as I say my scan was also bad and I also has a 1:2 risk level (although they said it was more like 90% sure of a chromosomal problem).

I will be keeping everything crossed that you get a good outcome. BTW there is an antenatal test/choices section on MN that you could post on too - plenty of ladies on there have been though similar and there are many happy outcome too xxx

Thanks so much for this. I am sure it will be fine, as you say, the sonographer said she would expect to see problems on the scan also, and she didn't. I think going for the CVS is the right call. I am very sorry for your result, I hope you have had some better luck since then.

Hi Londonista- I like katiecubs also had a 1:2 risk for both downs syndrome and Edwards Syndrome, my bloods were awful and the scan showed the baby's bowel had grown outside the body, there were problems with the heart and also the kidneys. Sadly after having a CVS (which was fine, little uncomfortable but that was all) it was confirmed our baby had Edwards Syndrome.

I think that should feel hopeful if everything on the scan looked good, I'm sure something would have been picked up if there were problems. Personally I think for peace of mind you are doing the right thing, but I wish you the best of luck and hope everything is ok
