I went to the midwife when I was 24 weeks and she said I was measuring small but she'd keep an eye on it.

I went back again today (28+1) and she said I haven't grown AT ALL.

She then got straight on the phone to the hospital and booked a scan for tomorrow.

Baby's heartbeat is strong though.

Any advice??? What could be wrong???

(Hubby thinks maybe baby is a midget)

from my experience, bump measuring is all a bit hit and miss. I was told I was too big for my dates with DS constantly, that i wouldn't be able to have a VB, he'd be so big he'd need more than bf etc etc He was born a very average 8lb 4!

so as to what could be wrong, sorry i don't know but it could be nothing

bluefootedpenguin · 12/05/2010 19:59

This form of measuring is really unreliable. I measured fine up to about 32 weeks and then began to get smaller! I don't think so. There was a lot of fuss when at 36 weeks I was only measuring 30 weeks. Underwent late scans to check baby size and placenta flow. All fine. Baby born 40+5 weighing 6lb 8oz - ok, not a whopper but healthy. I think a lot depends on who measures you but also how your body accommodates a baby. I have a long body and as she grew I think I had a bit more space and so didn't grow outwards in a huge way. I gained about 2 1/2 stone but only looked about 7 months pregnant at the end. Try not to worry. There have been lost of other MN posts about this.x

NowWhatIsit · 12/05/2010 20:04

I agree, try no to worry. Measuring fundal height is not too accurate, wait for scan. Good it's tomorrow. Let us know how you get on.

JamieJay · 12/05/2010 20:07

Not any experience with measuring small but my story should help show that fundal height is hit and miss!

25 weeks - measured 29cm (cue madwife panic over huge baby)
26 weeks - measured 26cm
28 weeks - measured 28.5cm

So I've apprently shrunk in the last 3 weeks!

I've also know a number of people who have been told that baby is huge/tiny during pregnancy and have ended up giving birth to an average size baby.

A strong heartbeat is a good thing so I don't think there is any reason to worry. Good luck for tomorrow.

Den26 · 12/05/2010 20:11

Try not to worry. My MW thought i was measuring small, had growth scan today and measurements fine (i'm 38 wks) just the way baby is lying made it hard to measure properly.

Good luck tomorrow.

Harri2010 · 12/05/2010 20:13

I've had a growth scan today (second one) at 36+1 because measuring 32cm, same as 4 weeks ago.
Growth scan absolutely normal (big relief!) so I just have a neat bump and a not massive baby.
So try not to worry, as above, this measuring business is very inaccurate. At least you get to see your baby again and hopefully all will be well.

Good luck.

Wholelottalove · 12/05/2010 20:17

I don't think they even both measure you everywhere. My bump was felt but no-one ever got a tape measure out for me with DD. I was told I was having a small baby and DD was 8lb 1 so I don't think it is an exact science.

Good luck for your scan tomorrow.

Wholelottalove · 12/05/2010 20:17

bother to measure you

orangehead · 12/05/2010 20:19

I was told at 25 weeks that I was very big for dates, I was then sent for an extra scan and told not to be surprised if a twin had been hiding at the other scans. No twin was found and ds1 ws 8.7 when born. Its always nice to get an extra picture. Hope everything ok

VirtualPA · 12/05/2010 21:34

Thank you, Ill update you tomorrow.

I spent the last 2 months of my last pregnancy in Italy and I was never measured, apparently they stopped doing it ages ago as it is not reliable at all. i would try not to worry too much. Hope everything goes ok

greensnail · 12/05/2010 22:04

My bump was measured yesterday by two different people within minutes of each other. The second measurement was 4cm bigger than the first . Its really not very accurate, hope the scan goes well, its lovely to get another peek at the baby anyway.

strawberrycake · 12/05/2010 22:06

I've never been measured, so I doubt it's too big a deal.

senseofhumourfailure · 12/05/2010 22:11

I was never measured either, midwife said was so inaccurate they don't do it any more. Good luck for your scan hope all ok and at least you get to see baby!

LuluF · 12/05/2010 22:25

We had our ante-natal care with DD1 up north, no measuring. DD2 - I got measured, was told I was hadn't grown, so was sent for scan - all fine. I can't remember if I was measured or not with DS - I think it depends where you live and current thinking. Yes - nice to see baby again.

fudgecat · 13/05/2010 14:27

How did you get on today?

ib · 13/05/2010 14:34

Have had 2 dc and never been measured. Growth scan was way off though...so would be a bit sceptical even of that if all else is fine.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 13/05/2010 14:38

I was measured by my MW and GP in DS's pregnancy and somewhere in the late 20's, the bump started to look really large. When it got to three weeks above gestation date, the MW refered me for a scan for possible macrosomia. HOwever, some of the measurements were taken by the GP, who took them from an entirely different place and sort of waved the tape around my belly vaguely. The scans did show he was largeish, but another one showed he'd settled right down to normal levels. He came out, on his due date, at 7lb 4, which is below average for a boy!

I'm 5'2" and have a short body, so there's nowhere for the bump to go than out. I don't know why they bother with bump measurements, tbh. There are other ways of checking the health of the fetus.

OP, how are you getting on? Have you had your scan yet?

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 13/05/2010 14:41

I was measured as being too big.
The scan said baby would be big.

I had polyhydromnious and baby was 6b 12.5oz.

dublinmom · 13/05/2010 14:48

About your DH worrying if the baby is a 'midget' -- my friend has a little boy with restricted growth (more preferred term). The 20 week scan picked it up (short arms and legs) and he was nearly 10 lbs at birth.

MW thought my last baby was small for dates, ended up 8lb 12oz girl. Roomy insides, me.

OrganicHairbrush · 13/05/2010 16:41

It's all extremely unreliable and inaccurate.

I was told I was measuring extremely small, and DD was 7lb which is far from tiny/

Relax!

VirtualPA · 13/05/2010 17:33

I had the scan today. I do have a teeny bump but apparently the baby is above average weight

Panic over!
