When were you in maternity clothes?

I'm 20 wks with my DC2 and still easily in my normal jeans. I am not boasting but trying to encourage myself as I put on loads of weight when I had my DD and I think I was in mat clothes at this stage last time I would add though that I was a size 10 pre-children, and now I am a size 14 so I'm fatter. I want to stay in normal clothes as long as poss. What's a reasonable amount of weeks to aim for?

LadyThompson- lucky you! I would just keep wearing normal clothes as long as that felt comfortable. Everyone's body is different and it's amazing what variety there is in our bumps at different stages!

With my first, I could still wear normal clothes until about 22 weeks. My best friend was showing a proper bump by 15 weeks with her first. You just never know! This is my fourth, I'm 11weeks, and am finding things are a bit tighter A LOT earlier now. I can still wear my jeans, but halfway through the day I have to unbutton them. I busted out my smaller-size maternity jeans the other day and they felt FAB!

starshaker · 12/05/2010 17:57

I was in maternity at 9 weeks this time but i have 2 in here lol

LadyThompson · 12/05/2010 18:01

I know it sounds shallow but the weight I put on (getting on for 4 stones) last time was agony to lose and made me really miserable, and I still had a couple to go when I got pregnant again, so I am just really trying to mind what I eat. I am not dieting, just...watching it. I can't remember how the weight goes on in the twentysomething weeks of pregnancy and I am wondering if I will be freaky if I am still in normal clothes in a month or more.

LadyThompson · 12/05/2010 18:07

26 weeks for me and I had put on a fair amount of weight by that point - think I had just put it on everywhere but my bump as maternity stuff just looked daft on me (think deflated balloon!)

Emster30 · 12/05/2010 20:22

I started off a size 12 and was digging out my old trousers from my size 14-16 days by about 9 weeks. After my scan at 11 weeks I gratefully bought maternity trousers. I was OK in normal tops, with bump bands where necessary, until about 18-20 weeks.

Now at 29+4 I can definitely only wear maternity stuff! I have about 5 long-sleeved tops and 5 t-shirt type things so can only manage about 5 days of any one type of weather without needing to do washing, which is quite annoying.

Tootlesmummy · 12/05/2010 20:27

It was a bit odd for me. I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 20 weeks and until then was wearing size 6 - 8. As soon as I found out I had to go straight into maternity wear as the bump appeared overnight!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 12/05/2010 20:30

Both times I was in my normal jeans until about 22 weeks, but both times I had all day sickness which stopped the weight going on.

I think I stayed in my normal tops for longer than 22 weeks though, but I ended up stretching them so they were chucked in the bin after having ds's.

8 weeks... oops!! (about 15/16 last time)

Sara79 · 12/05/2010 20:40

at 12 weeks for me.

Meglet · 12/05/2010 20:40

I was skinny at the start of both pregnancies so went into maternity jeans / work trousers by 10 weeks.

Tops and t-shirts a few weeks later.

LadyThompson · 12/05/2010 20:52

I think if you are skinnier you are in them sooner, Meglet, so actually I think I shouldn't be too pleased that I am not in them yet!

22 weeks - bump appeared almost overnight. Still wearing some of my normal tops, yoga trousers and so on at 27 weeks, but won't be for much longer.

NonnoMum · 12/05/2010 21:01

Haven't you heard:

1st baby - you get into your maternity clothes as soon as you can...
2nd baby - you put off getting in your maternity clothes for as long as you can
3rd baby - your normal clothes ARE maternity...

tanmu82 · 12/05/2010 21:31

lol nonnoMum, I've heard that before, but it doesn't apply to me thankfully! I am 15wks with my 3rd and am normally a size 8. I have had to ditch all my tiny waisted skirts and jeans for my old size 10 ones, but no mat clothes other than a top I treated myself to from Seraphine for my birthday - It doesn't look maternity and although fits beautifully now, it will def last me right the way through (the cut is magnificent!)

I actually don't remember when I started wearing mat clothes with my other two - they were a while ago now (DS is almost 7 and DD is 5 1/2) I think that I may get away with the jeans for a while yet, but I'll need to buy some tops that cover the bump in the next couple weeks - I'm not really fond of the belly bands...

joyfull · 12/05/2010 21:34

I seriously can't remember! DS is now 4... what I DO know, is that the decision to change to maternity wear was partly because my skin was just so sensitive. Zips and seams drove me mad - bring on the lycra panels!

DomesticG0ddess · 13/05/2010 12:35

Nonnomum, that is really funny!

But LadyThompson, surely it is the size of your bump that puts you in maternity clothes, not piling on the weight - ie. if you buy size 10 maternity jeans, the size of the legs are virtually the same as non-maternity, etc? So I wouldn't worry at all, when you get into maternity clothes, but the size of them! Having a large bump does not mean someone is putting on too much weight - some women just have much bigger bumps than others!

I am 17 weeks with DC2 and not in maternity clothes yet, but I love wearing leggings/tunics anyway, and although I was the same size/weight when I got pg this time as when I got pg with DS 4 years ago my clothes are generally looser and more comfortable in style I think!

Daynee · 13/05/2010 12:46

I'm 19 weeks, still in normal jeans but they are getting tight now around the thigh, butt, and of course, stomach area...I was a size 2, now about a size 4...So I don't think it matters how big you were to start with! I'm dreading having to buy maternity jeans because they're not so cute...

legallyblond · 13/05/2010 13:32

I was in maternity clothes at 16 weeks-ish. This is my first. I was/am a size 10 and seem to have gained weight on my bump and boobs only! Everything else looks the same (so far - only 21 weeks!).

Starting to slightly fret about losing weight post-pregnancy though... I have gained almost a stone so far! As I said, mostly on bump and boobs, but still... a long way to go!!! I am only halfway through the pregnancy and most of the serious growing is yet to come!!!

Oh, and DomesticGoddess - that must be right, of course. Its the bump that needs the extra space in the maternity clothes, so going into maternity clothes early is nothing to do with weight, its just how big/fast your bump appears. Incidentally, I have found that the rest (bump bit aside) of maternity clothes is massive compared to normal sizes! I have had to buy an 8 in most maternity clothes just so they fit me everywhere else...and I am really, really not a size 8 - I 5'11" for god's sake, I'd have to be a scarecrow!

By the way, is there a link or site anywhere which shows guideline weight gains during pregnancy and at what stages in the pregancy the gains happen?
