How much weight to gain? Can't stop eating!!

Is there a guideline as to roughly how much weight we should gain (per week/per trimester)?

I can't stop eating and am craving fatty foods (mainly cheese, pizza etc)

I asked the MW who just made some comment about 'if your baby wants it'. But my DH thinks I should eat more healthily for the baby.

I obviously won't be going on a diet or anything, but just want to know how far off the mark I am, so that if I going to look like a whale afterwards I will be prepared!

I am either 12 or 15 weeks preg (long story!) and have put on about a stone.

Hi, few things on the net, here's one pregnancy.about.com/cs/symptoms/a/weightgain.htm

It does seem to depend on if you were under/normal/over weight before you started.

Interestingly most things say you should put on weight, even if you are overweight - maybe 15lbs, but my GP said it was OK for me to try to put on very little (I put on about 2stone towards the end of last year due to stress). I'm def not going to worry, baby is more important, only 6+6 at mo, and still same pre pg weight

I too was worried about this - first 12 weeks, nearly a stone put on mainly I think to amount of carbs consumed to stop feeling sick! I am however, 19 weeks with a bigger bump but have not put on anymore weight. Infact, think I have lost a bit. So maybe don't worry too soon!!

mum2oneloudbaby · 12/05/2010 19:56

everybody is different. i put on loads of weight in first tri because i feel sick all the time, don't exercise because i don't have the energy and eat loads of everything to stave of nausea/sickness.

2nd tri not much at all back to exercising and get control of eating more healthily because i feel slightly better.

3rd tri piling it on again.

but if you read a few of these threads you'll see some people put it all on at the end or in the middle.

i would suggest don't worry too much to start with. also make sure you are eating enough protein this can help stabilise appetite.

I was so worried about gaining to much that i have kept a very close eye on my weight gain. I weigh myself every thursday on the scales at work (work in a vet clinic).

I am now 27 weeks and have gained 7.6kg (16lbs) so far but i am all bump. Customers don't realise i am pregnant until i turn round. Which is great and my midwife is very happy with my weight gain.

Read somewhere that if you are healthy weight before conception then 25-35lbs is normal and expected weight gain.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry i know this is slightly off the subject but i am the having trouble the other way i am 7+4 wks preg and in the last 3and a half weeks have lost 10lbs. I am about 2 stone over weight (so can afford to lose some)i have been feeling really sick and gone off alot of foods ie anything sweet. I am having to force myself to eat 3 small meals and some fruit or dry crackers a day. I see the midwife on monday for the first time so will tell her then. But wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and will it be ok?

Hevster · 13/05/2010 09:40

websticks worry not, I lost 10lbs in the first 12 weeks(and am not overweight) due to hyperemesis and am only putting it back on slowly now due to mediaction. As lond as you are getting your 5 a day and eating healthily then little un will be just fine

websticks · 13/05/2010 09:59

Thanks Hevster
You have put my mind at rest.

Hevster · 13/05/2010 11:41

you're welcome websticks

I'm 16wk & at midwife appointment yesterday found out I've put a stone on already!!! With DS1 I put on about 3.5 stone by the end. I'm not too concerned though, I think we're all different & we have to eat what our body tells us to!!! (well that's my excuse!)

MadameCheese · 13/05/2010 15:25

PixieCake are you me? I'm now 21 weeks and actually realise I haven't been like this since week 16 so don't panic and hopefully it will pass soon

JoEW · 13/05/2010 17:10

I have one craving, one alone, and this is for chocolate. I don't even like chocolate very much, normally. I am eating loads and have already put on 4lbs and I'm only somewhere between 6 - 9 weeks (same long story)! Worried I am going to be the size of a house soon and already having to undo the top button on my jeans now and again. All I've read is that you are supposed to gain around 25 - 35 pounds in total, depending on your starting weight. I'm hoping for not more than two stone but making rather scary progress already.

lilmissmummy · 13/05/2010 19:10

I read this is one of those pregnancy books:-

Here are the 'average' figures......
Baby = 7.5 - 8.5lbs
Placenta = 1.5 - 2lbs
Amniotic fluid = 2lbs
Blood volume = 4lbs
Womb muscle = 2 -2.5lbs
Water = 4lbs
Breast tissue = 2lbs
Energy reserves (for labour) = 7lb

So that works out about 2 and a bit stones on average.

I agree with bubbakin and you should eat what your body tells you to eat! My body tells me to eat absolutely everything!
