A very stupid question probably but what is the average length of one's cervix, particularly towards the end? Basically had an internal yesterday at 39weeks and was told cx is closed and 2cm long, I took this all in my stride because the figure means nothing to me! Could anyone enlighten me please!

Blimey, I've never heard of the length of your cervix. I wonder if there's another name (ie medical term) for the length of the cervix that I've heard?

2cm sounds perfectly acceptable for 39 weeks. Of course everyone is different but it would start at about 3cm and as you begin to labour it would be completely taken up into the lower portion of your womb and so have no length at all iyswim. It also changes in consistency from hard to soft, moves from a posterior position (behind baby's head) to a more anterior one, and only then begins to open up.
If this is your first baby, the early stages of labour (the latent phase, which can take days or hours) would involve these changes to your cervix.
Hope this helps.

Oo helpful indeed, thanks! I knew about how it has to change position and consistency but the length thing was a mystery! Any idea of when labour is likely to start!? Clutching at straws here!
