When do you tell people?

Found out a few days ago I'm pregnant, hooray! I know that you're meant to keep it quiet for a while but I'm desperate to tell my best friends. Would you tell a couple of close friends before the first scan? If not, how do you keep it secret without bursting?!

I'd definitely tell my close friends (in fact I did). I don't see the point in not doing so

I think it's entirely up to you! Some people choose not to, others want close friends/family to know so they can offer support, others tell the entire world

I have told close family and friends (I'm 7 weeks) but keeping it quiet at work, as I don't want to be topic of gossip if anything goes wrong. I did the same last time too. I would have found it too hard not to tell anyone!

Agree it is entirely up to you! But do make sure DH/DP is OK with what you decide first. We told my Dad at 9 weeks but waited until after the 12 week scan before telling everyone else including the rest of the family. DH's family all live abroad, but it was feeling really artificial not telling my Dad with whom we are quite close. (BTW - my Mum's dead in case you were wondering why I'd tell my Dad but leave my Mum in the dark!!) However because I'd had some bleeding early in pregnancy I'd already had a couple of scans earlier than normal - and we made the decision to wait until the second one at 8.5 weeks before telling my Dad. It was nice telling everyone at 12 weeks, but in some ways for a short while after I missed the privacy and intimacy of it being just me, DH, my Dad (and of course masses and masses of healthcare professionals!) knowing about it. Also as soon as you tell people some will start with the "helpful" advice. Which can be tiresome/downright infuriating. Being free of that part of things for the first 12 weeks was certainly a bonus!!

I think the most important thing is to agree with DH/DP what you want to do.

I found it really difficult to keep secret, actually found out on New Years Eve about two hours before we had lots of friends arriving, DH and I sat there with huge silly grins all night, I think people thought we had been at the wine before they arrived.

We told my parents when I was six weeks, but only because they were about to book a holiday which would mean they would be away for a whole month when 'wriggler' is due.

We didn't tell anybody else until after the 12 week scan, although I came close lots of times!Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
