Can home test indicate possible twin pregnancy??

Hi,
My friend has twins in the family and is paranoid about having them herself. She's got into a spin because she tested 5 days before her period was due with a clearblue test and got a very faint, stand by the window and turn it every which way to be sure blue line. She repeated the test 4 days later 1 day before period due in the afternoon and got a full blown neon yes line!
She said with the previous single pregnancy she did a test about the same time and again 4 days later and the 4 days later one was 1st thing in the morning and although darker than the really faint one it was still fairly faint.
Shes getting all worked up thinking that this could indicate twins as her HCG levels would be doubling quicker, does anyone have any advice or experience of this?
She can't get a midwife app til mid June so is going to be worrying for uite some time otherwise!!

what's the point in worrying? if she is, she is!

Presuming of course she's happy to be pg.

Ime, no it's no indication at all. All a pg test tells you is whether or not you are pg. When she sees her m/w, she should tell her there is a history of twins and they will take it from there.

preg tests can't say whether it's twins or a single, same as they can't tell you whether it's a boy or a girl.

She wants to be preg but doesn't think she'd cope with twins as her husband is away a lot and she doesn't have family close and has a baby under 1 already

she can go for an early scan privately which will cost around £120

I had the same experience - the line was so thick and blue and I felt so nauseous so quickly, I was convinced I was carrying twins. (And, as wonderful as twins are, for personal reasons I was completely freaked out by the idea).

In week 6, my symptoms disappeared for a few days and I got really concerned. I had my HCG levels tested over two days and again, they were really high - one of them off the chart for that period. Again, I was sure it had to be twins. I went for an early scan and no...one little heartbeat only

Some people just have higher HGC levels - and in fact, from the little I understand, it's probably far better than lower HGC levels...which can lead to miscarriage

if she is, is she likely to terminate?

If not, then I really don't see any point in worrying about it.

Regardless of a multiple pg, having 2 under 2 is incredibly hard! Been there and done it twice (fool that I was)

nottoosureanymore · 05/05/2010 14:43

'Course worrying is a part of pg, I understand that. Good luck to her!

I have twins and I can honestly say I didn't have a clue until I went for my scan at 12 weeks. In fact we were joking the night before about it being twins and sure enough we were. If she's destined to have twins, they'll be there whether she has an early scan or not.

seasister · 05/05/2010 14:47

Yes, but for some women it's a stressful idea and an early scan can help them prepare or put their mind at rest

ShowOfHands · 05/05/2010 14:48

I tested positive 6 days before my period was due, both times I was pg. Also had crippling morning sickness from a matter of days after conception.

Both singleton pregnancies.

Means nowt.

Its the not knowing that is scaring her, once she found she was she'd get her head round it, she'd love twins if she had help around but the thought of having them with her husband worrking away and her family miles away is a little overwhelming. Thanks for your replies, I guess she'll just have to wait and see!!
No way she'd terminate no, she lost one previously so she could never take that option
