1st Doctors appointment

Hi all

Went to the doctors this morning to confirm that i am pregnant, i have come back feeling very disappointed all they did was took my details and told me the midwife would be intouch! is this normal?

Congratulations. I know exactly how you are feeling, I went through exactly the same thing. This is my first pregnancy.. I don't know what I was expecting but it was certainly more than 'the midwife will be in touch!'

You will find that timings of appointments vary dramatically from area to area. I had my 'booking in appointment' at 10 weeks, scan at 13 weeks then nothing until 20 weeks scan.

Your midwife will explain how things work in your area. Have you been given a EDD?

Yes, I had exactly the same thing. Went to the docs when I found out and was there for about 10 minutes. I've got my first midwife appointment Friday (10 weeks) so hoping to feel a bit more preg then!

Think i was after a little more that fill in a form and call back at 12 to make an appointment! Thought it might have been confirmed either with a wee test or bloods?
Not been given EDD but have worked it out on here think it will be around 30December ish? This is might first baby just thought there would be more information from the doctor.
Such a confusing time..........

the problem is, to us it's a massive deal, but they dont really care - they see pregnant people all the time, so dont treat you in any special way.
Ive never had a pregnancy confirmed by the GP, which I thought they did as standard.
But yes, they should give you something, even if it's just a leaflet about what not to eat. They shouldnt be waiting till your booking in appt (often after 10 weeks) to tell you important things that could impact on the baby's health.

I've never had a GP or a midwife make any sort of confirmation that I was pregnant - they just took my word for it! You'll get bloods and urine done at your booking appointment so remember to take a sample with you.

hee hee - I'm convinced the midwife is going to send me home for wasting her time because I'm not really pregnant. I've actually had sleepless nights about it!

I really thought the GP would want to confirm I'm PG but she just gave me a leaflet to read about not eating anything remotely tasty and sent me on my way.

I went to my GP to declare my prgnancy this morning and had the same scenario as you, although I was prepared as it's my 2nd.
Surprinsingly though I was "told off" for reporting my pregnancy so late (I'm 9 weeks today). But I really didn't have much choice as I had to register to this new GP - I moved home recently, and went on hols for a week last week.

Anyway, I wanted to share this with you all cause I'm keeping the pregnancy quiet-ish until the first scan. But I can't wait! I so much more excited than the first time, it's a delight. I'd never thought you could feel so much excitement on a subsequent pregnancy. But hell you do!

When I first saw my GP (for about 2 minutes) and then the midwife (which was a much longer appointment) I was surprised no one tested me. It wasn't until I had my scan at 10 weeks (am type 1 diabetic so was seen at the hospital early) that I was sure I was actually pregnant, especially as I hadn't had any morning sickness. I thought they'd send me home for being a fake and wasting their time. I guess the tests we use at home are so reliable now there's no reason to doubt it, plus most people do more than one test (I did 3).

And yh its normal to feel a lil fobbed off as i did with all mine. (i'm 29wks with my 3rd DC) Did ur doc give you any folic acid to take?? mine did but didnt tell me and at 13wks the receptionist finally gave it me when i went in for my antibiotics for my stomach infection!
As long as u eat healthy and avoid the obvious all will be ok..
On here you'll find what u can/cant eat but i think on alot they are over critacle..

For all 1st time mums here, EDD is worked out from 1st day of your last period..

Ahhh, I remember this. With 1st pregnancy, the GP simply looked at me when I told him, turned round (to pile of forms) and then handed me one saying 'fill out this form' in a monotone. I sat there for a moment, foolishly expecting something more and eventually he added 'hand it to reception and the midwife will be in touch'. And those 2 sentences were seriously it! Was naively expecting more but I guess it's pretty routine.
Next time, I just went straight to the midwife...

Yes I was the same, was told to take folic acid and not to smoke plus asked if I had any questions. THey then put my name in the midwife's book and she contacted me and booked my 12 week scan.

This time around I just phone the surgery to tell them but there is now a form to fill in, so had to go there anyway although didn't see a GP.

My husband took the day off work and everything - all for a ten minute appointment. The GP did look satisfyingly pleased for us, though - I think we cheered up his afternoon.

He looked after me through a bout of depression three years ago and he told us both very sternly that we were to look out for perinatal depression. And he explained about the one-in-eight miscarriage statistic. And told us to pick up a maternity pack on the way out.

It was a relief to actually tell someone -- my husband is determined to keep it a secret until 12 weeks.

I didn't even bother seeing the doctor with either of mine. What for? Just booked direct with the midwife.
