I have just found out I am 6 weeks pregnant, lets call it a happy accident , we already have twin 5 year old girls. I haven't been taking folic acid as was not planning on extending our family. Although I have started on it straight away, have I done any damage?? This can't be uncommon can it??!!

No it isn't uncommon at all - my last pregnancy, I didn't start folic acid until 6 weeks, and all was well. Lots of women get pregnant accidentally, and some don't find out until well after you did. Lots of other women don't take folic acid because they don't know they're supposed to, but spina bifida is still a rare condition (though sadly not rare enough).

If you're anything like me you probably won't relax until you know for sure your baby is fine, but the statistics are in your favour here, especially as you've started with the folic acid now.

Mmmm hmmm - me too. I am due in early Sept with my first and only started folic acid at 5 weeks pregnant.
I'm sure this happens a lot!
PS: Congrats too!

If you have a healthy diet you've probably had a good folic acid intake anyway. Don't worry & CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

I would be surprised if as many as half of women have taken folic acid in advance tbh.
