My sister is 11+ weeks pregnant, she has her nuchal scan tommorow.

Today she went to the loo and wiped and there was watery caramel coloured stuff (alot of it) she put a pad on and it seaped onto it, and when she was on the toilet it trickled out?

We went to the doctord and she examined her cervix and it is closed.

Also used a doopler to find the heartrbeat but couldnt, but she did say it is 50/50 with that.

Has anyone else had this or have any idea?

Also when can a heart beat be heard.

She is so upset and in shock and there is no pain or cramps, there is no bright red blood.

TIA

Ok, I'm not an expert on these things but will tell you what I "know".

I thought that brown discharge = old blood? It could have now seeped out but is actually from conception when the egg has burrowed into the lining. This would explain lack of cramps, escalation of bleeding and the cervix still being closed.

Re the doppler, my mw wouldn't use one on me til I was 16 weeks as she said it was unreliable before then. Some ppl who have a doppler at home can find it before then though.

I'm so glad she has a scan tomorrow, hopefully it will put her mind at rest.

Fingers crossed for her.

Hi,
Brown coloured discharge is 'spotting' and is often nothing to worry about. This has happened to me three times this pregnancy and the amount of it can be really frightening.
As long as your sister is in no pain or the flow doesn't turn red, she should be okay, and if she has a scan tomorrow they will be able to put her mind at rest.
I was put off buying a doppler with this pg because it can be hard to find a heartbeat before about 15 weeks, at which time I can usually feel movement, so I wouldn't be concerned at 11 weeks.
My midwife couldn't really say what causes the spotting but I suspect that when a baby is busy burrowing itself into the lining of your uterus, its bound to hit a blood vessel or two. That's my take on it anyway!
Very best of luck to your sister x
